Pool Salt Calculator
How much salt for pool owners with a saltwater chlorine generator? This free pool salt calculator and saltwater pool salt calculator tells you how much salt to add to your saltwater pool in pounds, kilograms, and 40-lb bags — plus a pool salt level calculator, a salt cell sizing calculator, and a pool salt cost calculator.
100% client-side — no signup, nothing uploaded.
Pool chemistry: follow your salt chlorine generator manual, test salt with a strip or meter regularly, and recheck surprising readings before adding chemicals. This tool is an estimate, not professional advice.
lb of salt = ppm to add × pool gallons × 8.34 ÷ 1,000,000One gallon of water weighs 8.34 lb. For saltwater pool startup salt, test your current salt ppm first — many pools already contain some salt.
How Much Salt to Add to Saltwater Pool
Enter your pool size and salt readings. Wondering how many bags of salt for pool startup? Measure first, then calculate — salt is recycled by the cell, so you only replace what water loss takes away.
Salt PPM Calculator Pool — Level Check
Enter a salt test reading to interpret it against your system band: pool salt level too high, too low, or fine. This check also tells you how to raise salt level in pool water (add the computed dose) or lower it (partial drain).
Salt Cell Sizing Calculator
A salt cell chlorine output calculator and sizing guide. Sizing guidance: choose a cell rated for at least 2x your pool volume so it runs at partial output and lasts longer.
Guidance only, not a manufacturer recommendation. Cell outputs below are published ratings (lb of chlorine per day at 100%); verify against your cell manual and confirm sizing with your salt system maker.
Pool Salt Cost Calculator
Estimate the cost of a 40 lb bag pool salt purchase for startup or top-up.
Estimate only — enter your local store price per 40-lb bag. Salt is mostly a one-time startup cost; yearly top-ups are small.
Worked example
A 20,000-gallon pool tests at 500 ppm salt and the owner targets 3,200 ppm (Hayward AquaRite).
- Salt to add: 3,200 − 500 = 2,700 ppm
- lb = 2,700 × 20,000 × 8.34 ÷ 1,000,000 = 450.4 lb (204.3 kg)
- Bags: 450.4 ÷ 40 = 11.3 → buy 12 forty-pound bags.
Broadcast with the pump running, brush until dissolved, and retest after 24 hours.

Pool salt questions
How much salt do I need to add to my saltwater pool?
Use the formula pounds of salt = ppm to add × pool gallons ÷ 119,904. Worked example: a 20,000 gallon pool testing at 500 ppm needs 3,200 ppm, so 2,700 × 20,000 ÷ 119,904 = 450.4 lb. That is 11.3 forty-pound bags, so buy 12 bags. The Salt dose tab above runs this for your exact pool.
What is the ideal salt level for a saltwater pool?
Follow your salt chlorine generator manual. Hayward AquaRite: 3,200 ppm ideal, 2,700 to 3,400 ppm operating range. Pentair IntelliChlor: 3,400 ppm ideal, 3,000 to 4,500 ppm range. Jandy AquaPure: 3,000 to 3,500 ppm optimum, target about 3,200 ppm. When in doubt, the 3200 ppm pool salt level is the safe middle of the Hayward and Jandy bands. The Hayward AquaRite salt level, Pentair IntelliChlor salt level, and Jandy AquaPure salt level guidance above comes from the respective owner manuals. Pick your system in the Salt level check tab for an exact reading.
How do I convert salt ppm to pounds?
This salt ppm to pounds calculator uses one formula: lb = ppm × gallons × 8.34 ÷ 1,000,000 — that is the whole pool salt conversion ppm to pounds in one line. So 1 ppm in a 10,000 gallon pool is 0.083 lb of salt, and 1,000 ppm in the same pool is 83.4 lb. Per gallon of pool water, that is 0.00834 lb of salt for each 1,000 ppm — the topic of how much salt per gallon of pool water in one number.
Does salt get used up in a saltwater pool?
No — does salt get used up in saltwater pool systems? It does not. The cell turns dissolved salt into chlorine, and the chlorine reverts to salt after sanitizing, so salt is recycled, not consumed. Salt level falls only when water leaves the pool: backwashing, splash-out, leaks, or rain overflow. Add salt at startup and after water replacement, not on a schedule.
What is the difference between this tool and the pool chlorine calculator?
Scope split. This tool doses sodium chloride (NaCl) salt for saltwater chlorine generators: salt ppm targets, salt level readings, salt cell sizing, and salt cost. Chlorine dosing — liquid chlorine, bleach, cal-hypo, dichlor, trichlor, shock, and SLAM — is a separate job handled by the pool chlorine calculator. One tool per chemical family keeps the math honest.
How to lower salt level in pool water?
Partially drain the pool and refill with fresh water — salt does not evaporate, so dilution is the only way down. Drain fraction = (current ppm − target ppm) ÷ current ppm. Example: 4,500 ppm down to 3,200 ppm means draining (4,500 − 3,200) ÷ 4,500 = 28.9 percent of the water, then refilling. Go in stages if you are unsure of the exact volume.
What kind of salt for saltwater pool?
Pure sodium chloride, at least 99 percent pure. Buy pool salt, solar salt, or food-grade water-softener salt in 40 lb bags — the standard 40 lb bag pool salt size. Do not use rock salt, iodized salt, or salt with anti-caking additives such as yellow prussiate of soda; impurities can stain pool surfaces and shorten cell life.
What size salt cell do I need for my pool?
Size guidance, not a manufacturer rule: pick a cell rated for at least twice your pool volume. For a 20,000 gallon pool that means a 40,000 gallon cell such as a Hayward T-CELL-15 or Pentair IntelliChlor IC40, each rated about 1.4 lb of chlorine per day. At 2 ppm daily chlorine demand the pool needs 0.33 lb per day, so such a cell covers it running about 24 percent of pump time. Confirm final sizing with your salt system manual. The Cell sizing tab checks this for your pool.
How much does it cost to salt a pool?
Estimate: number of 40-lb bags × price per bag. Example: 12 bags at $7.50 per bag = $90.00. Enter your local bag price in the Cost tab. Salt is mostly a one-time startup cost plus small top-ups after water loss, so the yearly cost stays low.
How do I test the salt level in my pool?
Use salt test strips or a digital meter calibrated for NaCl. Sample elbow-deep, away from return jets, and let the reading settle before trusting it. Your generator display estimates salt from cell current and can read several hundred ppm off, so verify any surprising reading with a kit before adding salt. That is the whole how to test salt level in pool routine: sample, wait, verify.
My pool was chlorinated before. Do I still add the full salt dose?
Test first. Pools sanitized with liquid chlorine or bleach already contain salt: each ppm of free chlorine from sodium hypochlorite leaves about 0.82 ppm of salt behind. A pool held at 3 ppm for years can carry a few hundred ppm of salt before you add a single bag. Enter your measured salt ppm in the Salt dose tab instead of assuming zero.
