Checking today's date…

Palindrome date tools

Three ways to explore palindrome dates. Everything runs in your browser — no data leaves your device.

What is a palindrome date?

A palindrome date is a calendar date whose digits read the same forwards and backwards when the date is written in a particular date format. The classic example is February 2, 2020: written as 02/02/2020 it produces the digit string 02022020, and reading that string backwards gives 02022020 again. Because the string is identical in both directions, the date is a palindrome date.

The method is always the same three steps: (1) write the date as a zero-padded digit string in the chosen format — February is 02, not 2, because the padding is part of the format; (2) reverse the digit string; (3) compare the original and the reversed string. If they match exactly, you have a palindrome date. The checker at the top of this page performs exactly these steps, and shows you the digit string and its reverse so you can see the comparison yourself.

Why the date format decides everything

Whether a date counts as a palindrome date depends entirely on the format — the same calendar day produces a different digit string in each one. The United States writes month first (MM/DD/YYYY), most of Europe writes day first (DD/MM/YYYY), and the ISO 8601 standard writes year first (YYYY-MM-DD). December 2, 2021 is 12022021 in MM/DD/YYYY — reversed 12022021, a palindrome — but the very same day is 02122021 in DD/MM/YYYY, which reversed is 12021120 and is not a palindrome. This is why any serious palindrome date list must state its format, and why this finder checks six formats side by side.

There is also a shorter family of formats that use a 2-digit year: MM/DD/YY, DD/MM/YY and YY-MM-DD. Because only six digits have to mirror each other instead of eight, palindrome dates are far more common there. Between 2000 and 2100 there are 24 palindrome dates in MM/DD/YY, 30 in DD/MM/YY and 30 in YY-MM-DD — roughly double the counts of the 8-digit formats (12, 29 and 12 respectively).

The universal palindrome: February 2, 2020

February 2, 2020 is the most famous palindrome date of modern times because it is a palindrome in all three 8-digit formats at once: 02022020 in MM/DD/YYYY, 02022020 in DD/MM/YYYY, and 20200202 in YYYY-MM-DD. Dates that line up across regional formats like this are called universal palindrome days, and they are extremely rare. One qualification is worth making: the universality holds for the 8-digit formats only. In the 6-digit short forms that day is 020220 and 200202, neither of which reads the same backwards — so be skeptical of any claim that a date is a palindrome in literally every format.

The twelve US-format palindromes of the 21st century

In the 8-digit US format (MM/DD/YYYY), the 21st century contains exactly twelve palindrome dates, and no more. The first was October 2, 2001 (10022001) and the last will be September 2, 2090 (09022090). Between them the pattern is strikingly regular: after December 2, 2021 (12022021), the remaining palindromes fall on the 2nd day of a month whose number mirrors the decade — March 2, 2030 (03022030), April 2, 2040 (04022040), May 2, 2050, and so on, one per decade. Measured from October 11, 2026, the next one is March 2, 2030 — 1,238 days away, while the previous one was December 2, 2021, 1,774 days earlier.

Worked example 1 — a palindrome date, step by step

Is 02/02/2020 a palindrome date in MM/DD/YYYY?

  1. Write the digit string. Month = 02, day = 02, year = 2020 → 02022020.
  2. Reverse it. Reading 02022020 backwards gives 02022020.
  3. Compare. 02022020 === 02022020 → match.

Verdict: yes — 02/02/2020 is a palindrome date. Bonus: in YYYY-MM-DD the same day is 20200202, also a palindrome.

Worked example 2 — a non-palindrome, and finding the next one

Is 10/11/2026 a palindrome date in MM/DD/YYYY?

  1. Write the digit string. Month = 10, day = 11, year = 2026 → 10112026.
  2. Reverse it. Reading 10112026 backwards gives 62021101.
  3. Compare. 10112026 !== 62021101 → no match.
  4. Find the next. Scanning forward day by day, the next date whose digit string mirrors itself is 03022030 — March 2, 2030, which is 1,238 days after October 11, 2026.

Verdict: no — but the next MM/DD/YYYY palindrome is March 2, 2030.

Leap years and calendar edge cases

February 29 exists only in leap years, and palindrome searches must respect that — a finder that accepted February 29, 2019 would be inventing dates. Real leap-day palindromes do exist: February 29, 2092 is a genuine DD/MM/YYYY palindrome (29022092), while February 29, 2020 is not (02292020 reversed is 02022920). This finder validates every date against the real calendar, including the century rules for leap years (2000 was a leap year; 1900 was not), and searches use the proleptic Gregorian calendar for years before the 1582 reform.

Palindrome dates vs. palindrome words. This tool finds palindrome dates — calendar dates like 02/02/2020 whose digits mirror. That is a different intent from checking palindrome words and phrases like "racecar" or "level", which is about letters, not calendar digits. If you want to test text, use a palindrome word checker instead.

Practical uses

People use palindrome dates to pick memorable wedding and anniversary dates, to check whether a birthday is a "palindrome birthday", and to plan events or product launches on dates that stand out. Because the answer depends on format, couples in the US and Europe can legitimately disagree about whether their wedding date qualifies — the six-format checker above settles that debate in one click.

Frequently asked questions

What is a palindrome date?

A palindrome date is a calendar date whose digits read the same forwards and backwards when the date is written in a particular format. For example, February 2, 2020 written as 02/02/2020 produces the digit string 02022020, which reversed is still 02022020 — so it is a palindrome date in that format.

How do I check whether a date is a palindrome date?

Write the date as a zero-padded digit string in your chosen format, reverse the string, and compare. Take December 2, 2021 in MM/DD/YYYY: the digit string is 12022021. Reversed it is 12022021. The two match, so December 2, 2021 is a palindrome date in MM/DD/YYYY. The checker at the top of this page does exactly these three steps for any date you enter.

Why does the date format change the answer?

The same calendar day produces a different digit string in each format, so a date can be a palindrome in one format and not in another. December 2, 2021 is 12022021 — a palindrome — in MM/DD/YYYY, but the same day is 02122021 in DD/MM/YYYY, which reversed is 12021120 and is not a palindrome. Always state the format when you call a date a palindrome date.

Was February 2, 2020 a palindrome date in every format?

It was a palindrome in all three 8-digit formats: 02022020 in MM/DD/YYYY, 02022020 in DD/MM/YYYY, and 20200202 in YYYY-MM-DD. That is why it is called a universal palindrome day. But it was not a palindrome in the 6-digit short forms: 020220 (MM/DD/YY) and 200202 (YY-MM-DD) do not read the same backwards. Claims about every format need this qualification.

How many palindrome dates are there in the 21st century?

In the 8-digit US format (MM/DD/YYYY) there are only 12 in the whole 21st century — the famous list from October 2, 2001 (10022001) to September 2, 2090 (09022090). In the 8-digit European format (DD/MM/YYYY) there are 29 between 2000 and 2100, and in ISO format (YYYY-MM-DD) there are 12. The full reference tables on this page list every one of them.

When is the next palindrome date?

It depends on the format you use. In MM/DD/YYYY, measured from October 11, 2026, the next palindrome date is March 2, 2030 — digit string 03022030 — which is 1,238 days later. The previous one was December 2, 2021 (12022021), 1,774 days earlier. Use the countdown tab above for a live answer from any starting date.

Is today a palindrome date?

Use the checker at the top of this page — it tests today against all six formats instantly. For reference, October 11, 2026 is not a palindrome in any of the six formats: 10112026, 11102026, 20261011, 101126, 111026 and 261011 none read the same backwards.

What is the difference between a palindrome date and a palindrome word?

A palindrome word or phrase, like racecar or level, is about letters reading the same backwards — that is a text problem. A palindrome date is about calendar digits in a date format — that is a date problem. They are different intents: this tool finds palindrome dates, while checking words and phrases is a separate job handled by a palindrome word checker.

Do leap years affect palindrome dates?

Yes — February 29 only exists in leap years, so any palindrome search must validate it. For example, February 29, 2092 is a genuine DD/MM/YYYY palindrome (29022092), while February 29, 2020 is not (02292020 reversed is 02022920). This tool only accepts February 29 in leap years and checks the digit string the same way as any other date.

Why do short 6-digit formats have so many more palindrome dates?

Fewer digits have to mirror each other, so palindromes are much easier to form. Between 2000 and 2100 there are 24 palindrome dates in MM/DD/YY, 30 in DD/MM/YY and 30 in YY-MM-DD — roughly double or more the 12, 29 and 12 found in the corresponding 8-digit formats.

What about dates written without leading zeros, like 5/20/25?

Writing May 20, 2025 as 5/20/25 gives the 5-character string 52025, which is a palindrome — but that is a different, unpadded convention. This tool uses the standard zero-padded digit strings (052025 for that date), which is what date-format palindrome lists are built on. The well-known 2020s streaks, such as May 20–29, 2025, rely on the unpadded M/D/YY convention.

How far back or forward can I search for palindrome dates?

The finder supports years 1 through 9999 using the proleptic Gregorian calendar — Gregorian leap-year rules extended backwards before the calendar reform of 1582. Keep ranges reasonable (a few centuries at a time) so the results list stays readable.
