05 · Frequently asked questions

Real answers about packing math, weight estimates, and what the generator can and can't do.

How does this packing list generator work?

Pick your trip type, number of days, season, whether the trip is international, and who is traveling. The generator applies fixed item-per-day rules — for example, T-shirts = days × 1 capped at 7, assuming weekly laundry — across five categories: documents, clothing, toiletries, gear, and kids’ items. It then totals every item and estimates baggage weight from per-item weights. Everything runs in your browser; no data ever leaves your device.

How many clothes should I pack for a 7-day trip?

For a 7-day beach trip the generator suggests 7 T-shirts, 4 shorts, 2 swimwear, 7 sets of underwear, and 4 pairs of socks. Daily-wear items are capped at 7 because the rules assume one laundry session per week. For trips longer than 7 days quantities stop growing, which is the key to packing light: a 60-day trip needs the same core wardrobe as a 7-day trip, plus season layers. All quantities are unisex averages — swap the clothing labels to match your wardrobe.

What are the most commonly forgotten travel items?

The items travelers most often leave behind are phone chargers, prescription medications, travel adapters, passports or IDs, sunscreen, and sunglasses. This generator flags them with a “Don’t forget” stamp in your list so they stand out. A good habit: pack these items first, the night before you leave.

How can I estimate my luggage weight before flying?

Every item in the generator carries an average weight — for example, a T-shirt is 180 g, hiking boots 1,100 g, and a laptop 1,500 g. The total is the sum of quantity × weight for every item, shown in kilograms and pounds. Compare it with your airline’s allowance, typically 7–10 kg for cabin bags and 23 kg for checked bags on international flights. The estimate is a planning guide, not a certified scale reading.

What should I pack for international travel?

Turn on the “International” toggle and the generator adds a passport, visa documents, a vaccination card, foreign currency or a travel card, a universal travel adapter, and a personal medications kit. Domestic trips get a national ID instead. Always double-check entry requirements with the destination’s official embassy or airline guidance before you fly.

What is the difference between the beach, business, adventure, and city packing lists?

Each trip type has its own clothing and gear database. Beach prioritizes swimwear and sun protection; business adds dress shirts, a blazer, a suit, dress shoes, a laptop and its charger; adventure adds moisture-wicking layers, hiking boots, a rain shell, a headlamp, and a first-aid kit; city focuses on versatile layers, walking shoes, and a guidebook. Season and trip length then adjust quantities on top.

How do I pack for a winter trip?

Choose “Winter” and the generator adds a heavy coat, two thermal base layers, gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf to any trip type. The layering logic follows the standard base + mid + shell system: thermals trap heat, fleece or a mid-layer insulates, and a shell blocks wind and rain. Winter trips are the heaviest — a 10-day winter adventure list can exceed 11 kg before kids’ gear.

What should I pack when traveling with kids?

Select “Family with kids” to add a kids’ category: diapers at 6 per day (capped at 60), wipes, spare clothing sets, snacks, toys, kids’ medications, a travel stroller, and a car seat. For a 10-day trip that is 60 diapers — the single biggest weight driver at around 15 kg of kids’ gear in total — so consider buying diapers at your destination for longer trips.

Can I print my packing list or save it?

Yes. After generating your list, use the “Print list” button — the page includes a print stylesheet that outputs a clean, checkbox-style manifest without navigation or extra sections. Choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog for a PDF copy you can keep on your phone. You can also use “Copy as text” to paste the list into your notes app, a spreadsheet, or share it. Checked-off items are tracked with a progress bar while you pack.

Is this packing list generator free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it is completely free with no account, no signup, and no usage limits. Generate as many lists as you like for different trips. Because it is a single static page, there is nothing to subscribe to and nothing to cancel.

Does the generator work offline? Is my trip data private?

Yes to both. The tool is 100% client-side: all calculations happen in your browser and no trip details, inputs, or results are ever sent to a server. Once the page has loaded, it even works without an internet connection. Your packing lists never leave your device.

What is the 5-4-3-2-1 packing method, and does this tool use it?

The 5-4-3-2-1 method is a minimalist rule of thumb: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 pairs of shoes, 2 layers, 1 hat for a week. This generator uses a more precise per-day system instead — for example, tops = days × 1 capped at 7 — which adapts to 1-day and 60-day trips rather than assuming a week. If you prefer minimalism, generate a list and simply uncheck the extras.

How accurate are the item quantities?

Quantities follow standard packing heuristics: one top per day, bottoms worn twice, underwear and socks daily, all capped at a 7-day laundry cycle. They are starting points for an average traveler — pack more if you dislike doing laundry on the road, or less if you travel ultralight. The methodology section lists every rule so you can audit the math yourself.

Can I use this for a road trip or a cruise?

Yes. Choose the closest trip type — city works well for road trips, beach for cruises — and set your trip length. Cruises are effectively international resort trips, so enable the international toggle for documents and adapters. For road trips, airline weight limits don’t apply, so treat the weight estimate as a car-loading guide rather than an airline constraint.
