Every recommendation above comes from published sizing rules, not guesswork:
28 × 52 in (71.1 × 132.1 cm); retail outer footprints run 52–56 × 28–32 in (132.1–142.2 × 71.1–81.3 cm). Mini crib dimensions are 37 3/8–38 5/8 × 23 3/8–24 5/8 in (94.9–98.1 × 59.4–62.5 cm). How much space does a crib need? The 36-inch crib clearance rule: crib + 36 in of space in front of crib (91.4 cm) — a 54 × 30 in crib needs about 66 in (167.6 cm) of wall.10 × 10 ft (100 sq ft = 9.29 sq m). Nursery room size of 70–99 sq ft is tight but workable with a mini crib; under 70 sq ft cannot hold the full set.36 × 36 in (91.4 × 91.4 cm) of footprint, plus 36 in (91.4 cm) of glider clearance behind for full recline and 12–18 in (30.5–45.7 cm) of glider recline space in front for the footrest — plan 87 in (221.0 cm) of depth and at least as much glider wall space as the chair is wide (slim models run under 30 in).17–18 × 30–31 in (43.2–45.7 × 76.2–78.7 cm); a changing dresser 30–36 in wide × 18–20 in deep (76.2–91.4 × 45.7–50.8 cm), height 36–42 in (91.4–106.7 cm), with 30–36 in of working space in front.30–48 in wide × 18–20 in deep (76.2–121.9 × 45.7–50.8 cm). Drawer pull-out: you need depth + 18 in in front — a 20 in deep dresser needs 38 in of nursery furniture spacing in front.≥36 in (91.4 cm) for comfortable walking, 30–35 in (76.2–88.9 cm) passable, under 30 in (76.2 cm) too tight.30–36 × 55–60 in (76.2–91.4 × 139.7–152.4 cm); plan 96 in (243.8 cm) of wall. Switch to a toddler bed at 35 in (88.9 cm) tall or when the child climbs out (CPSC).| Situation | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 54 × 30 in crib | 52–56 × 28–32 standard band; + 36 in front | Standard, needs 66 in (167.6 cm) of wall |
| 10 × 10 ft room | 100 sq ft = 9.29 sq m ≥ 100 | Comfortable full nursery |
| 32 in glider, 90 in deep, 40 in (101.6 cm) wall | needs 87 in (221.0 cm) deep | Fits, full recline possible |
| 33 × 19 × 38 in changing dresser, 36 in front | 30–36 W, 18–20 D, 36–42 H, front ≥ 36 | Ideal changing station |
| 40 in (101.6 cm) gap between crib and glider | ≥ 36 in | Comfortable nursery traffic path |
| Toddler stage, 100 in wall | needs 96 in (243.8 cm) | Fits with front zone to spare |
How much space for a glider? 87 inches of depth — more than most people guess. Mini crib vs standard crib: the mini saves about a third of the floor area (15.8 vs 24.75 sq ft zones) but the standard lasts 18–24 months. When to switch to a toddler bed? At 35 inches tall or when climbing out. A small nursery layout tip: use a dresser as a changing table to remove one piece of furniture entirely. Every nursery size in cm is one tap away with the metric toggle above.
A 10x10 nursery (100 sq ft, or 9.29 sq m) is the common minimum nursery room size for a full furniture set: standard crib, glider, changing dresser and dresser with proper clearances. Rooms of 70 to 99 sq ft can still work but feel tight — plan a mini crib and a slim glider under 30 inches wide. Under 70 sq ft is too small for a full set; share the parents' room or plan a nursery corner instead.
Standard crib dimensions: the CPSC requires a full-size crib interior of 28 x 52 inches (71.1 x 132.1 cm), and retail outer footprints run 52 to 56 inches long by 28 to 32 inches wide (132.1 to 142.2 by 71.1 to 81.3 cm). Use the Crib mode above with your exact crib dimensions in inches to get its class and required clearance zone.
Leave 36 inches (91.4 cm) of crib clearance in front of the long side of the crib — enough to stand, lean in and lift the baby comfortably. A standard 54 x 30 inch crib therefore needs about 66 inches (167.6 cm) of wall: 30 inches of crib plus 36 inches of working space.
Nursery glider dimensions run about 36 x 36 inches (91.4 x 91.4 cm) of floor footprint, but a glider needs more than its footprint: allow 36 inches (91.4 cm) of glider clearance behind it for full recline and 12 to 18 inches (30.5 to 45.7 cm) in front for the footrest or ottoman. Total glider wall space and depth to plan for is roughly 87 inches (221.0 cm) deep. Without the 36-inch rear zone you cannot recline fully.
Changing table dimensions: trays run 17 to 18 inches wide by 30 to 31 inches long (43.2 to 45.7 by 76.2 to 78.7 cm). Changing dresser dimensions run 30 to 36 inches wide by 18 to 20 inches deep (76.2 to 91.4 by 45.7 to 50.8 cm), at an ergonomic changing table size height of 36 to 42 inches (91.4 to 106.7 cm), with 30 to 36 inches (76.2 to 91.4 cm) of clear space in front for daily changes.
Nursery dresser dimensions run 30 to 48 inches wide by 18 to 20 inches deep (76.2 to 121.9 by 45.7 to 50.8 cm). Plan nursery furniture spacing around the drawers too: you need the dresser depth plus about 18 inches of drawer pull-out in front, so a 20-inch-deep dresser needs 38 inches of front space before the crib or glider.
The main nursery traffic path should be at least 36 inches (91.4 cm) wide for comfortable walking while carrying the baby. 30 to 35 inches (76.2 to 88.9 cm) is passable with care; anything under 30 inches (76.2 cm) is too tight for a main path. Use the Path mode above to check the gaps between your crib, glider and dresser.
Mini crib dimensions are 37 3/8 to 38 5/8 inches long by 23 3/8 to 24 5/8 inches wide (94.9 to 98.1 by 59.4 to 62.5 cm). A mini crib saves roughly a third of the floor area: its zone with clearance is about 15.8 sq ft versus 24.75 sq ft for a standard crib. Trade-off: a mini crib has a shorter usable life, while a standard crib lasts 18 to 24 months and many convert to toddler beds.
Toddler bed size runs about 30 to 36 inches wide by 55 to 60 inches long (76.2 to 91.4 by 139.7 to 152.4 cm); many use the standard crib mattress. Plan 96 inches (243.8 cm) of wall for a toddler bed: 60 inches of bed plus 36 inches of front zone. The Growth mode above checks whether your wall fits the bed now or needs the crib-to-bed conversion.
Move from crib to toddler bed when your child reaches 35 inches tall (88.9 cm) or can climb out of the crib, whichever comes first — this is the CPSC guidance. Convertible cribs transition into a toddler bed with a kit, which is why the Growth plan above sizes the future toddler-bed footprint while the nursery is still in its crib stage.
Yes — a dresser as a changing table is the classic small nursery layout trick and saves a whole piece of furniture. Pick a dresser 36 to 42 inches tall (91.4 to 106.7 cm) so you are not hunching, add a secured changing tray or topper with safety straps, and keep diapers and wipes within one-hand reach. Anchor the dresser to the wall.
36 inches is 91.44 cm. This is the magic number in nursery sizing: 36 inches of crib clearance, 36 inches of glider recline space, and a 36-inch minimum nursery traffic path. Toggle metric above to see every nursery size in cm.
