Can I weigh cash to count it?
Roughly, yes — for US notes. Divide the weight in grams by 1 to estimate the number of bills. But circulated notes pick up grime and can weigh up to 0.06–0.07 g more per note, so weighing is an estimate, not an exact count. Coins vary by era and composition, so weigh notes and coins separately.

What can’t this calculator do?
It computes cash weight from denominations — it is not a unit converter (see our weight converter for grams ↔ ounces ↔ pounds), and it excludes UK banknotes because the Bank of England publishes no fixed per-note weight.
Methodology & sources
- US banknotes: every Federal Reserve note weighs about 1 gram regardless of denomination (75% cotton / 25% linen), per the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. 454 notes = 1 pound.
- US coins (US Mint): cent 2.500 g · nickel 5.000 g · dime 2.268 g · quarter 5.670 g · half dollar 11.340 g · dollar 8.100 g.
- Euro coins (ECB): 1c 2.30 g · 2c 3.06 g · 5c 3.92 g · 10c 4.10 g · 20c 5.74 g · 50c 7.80 g · €1 7.50 g · €2 8.50 g.
- Euro notes: marked ~ because the ECB publishes no per-note weight. Values are derived from the industry-reported ~85 g/m² cotton-paper figure × each note’s area — e.g. the €5 (120×62 mm) comes to 0.63 g. Use as an estimate.
- UK coins (Royal Mint): 1p 3.56 g · 2p 7.12 g · 5p 3.25 g · 10p 6.50 g · 20p 5.00 g · 50p 8.00 g · £1 8.75 g · £2 12.00 g.
- UK notes: deliberately excluded — the Bank of England publishes no fixed per-note weight across its paper and polymer series, so we’d rather show nothing than an invented number.
