Letters to Numbers Converter
Convert letters to numbers (alphabet to numbers) with the A1Z26 cipher, decode numbers back to letters, or turn words into phone keypad digits. Free, instant, and everything runs in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.
A1Z26 maps A=1, B=2, C=3 … Z=26. Try HELLO — it becomes 8-5-12-12-15.
/ — so A B encodes as 1-/-2. Decoding accepts dashes, commas, spaces, or / between numbers; anything that is not 1–26 is skipped.The phone keypad layout: ABC→2, DEF→3, GHI→4, JKL→5, MNO→6, PQRS→7, TUV→8, WXYZ→9. Try CALL — it becomes 2255.
1-800-FLOWERS becomes 1-800-3569377 — the digits stay, the letters convert. Note that many letters can share one digit, so a keypad conversion cannot be reversed.Worked examples

Frequently asked questions
How does the A1Z26 letter to number conversion work?
Each letter of the alphabet is replaced by its position: A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, all the way to Z is 26. The name A1Z26 literally means A equals 1 and Z equals 26. So HELLO becomes 8-5-12-12-15.
Can I convert numbers back to letters?
Yes, in the A1Z26 tab choose Numbers to Letters, then type numbers like 8-5-12-12-15 and you get HELLO back. The decoder accepts dashes, commas, spaces, or slashes between numbers, and ignores anything outside 1 to 26.
How does the phone keypad letters to numbers conversion work?
It follows the classic telephone keypad: ABC on 2, DEF on 3, GHI on 4, JKL on 5, MNO on 6, PQRS on 7, TUV on 8, and WXYZ on 9. That is why CALL becomes 2255 and 1-800-FLOWERS becomes 1-800-3569377.
What happens to 0 and 1 on the phone keypad?
No letters are printed on the 0 or 1 keys, so digits pass through unchanged. Existing digits, spaces, dashes, parentheses, and plus signs are kept as they are; only letters are converted.
Why can the phone keypad conversion not be reversed?
Several letters share one key, so the mapping is many to one. The digit 2 could mean A, B, or C, so 2255 alone cannot tell you whether the word was CALL, BALK, or something else. A1Z26 is one to one, so it can be reversed.
