LED Video Wall Calculator

A vendor-neutral planning lab for LED video walls. Size the wall in panels, convert pixel pitch to resolution and viewing distance, estimate power draw and circuits, total weight, curved-wall layouts and budget — all in one place.

🔒 100% private — everything runs in your browser. No uploads, no tracking.

What this LED video wall calculator covers: an LED wall panel calculator (how many panels for any target size — including the classic LED panel calculator 500x500 setup), an LED wall pixel calculator and LED wall pitch calculator (pixel pitch → an LED video wall resolution calculator), a pixel pitch viewing distance calculator (minimum, comfortable and fine-detail distances), an LED wall power calculator (power consumption in kW + 16 A/230 V circuits) with an LED wall weight calculator, an LED wall curve calculator for curved walls, and an LED wall cost estimator that answers "how much does a LED video wall cost".

Planning estimates, not engineering. Panel counts, resolution and viewing-distance math are exact arithmetic. Power, weight, rigging and cost are estimates — panel specs vary by vendor and model. Confirm with your panel datasheet and consult a professional AV integrator for rigging, power distribution and structural work.

How the math works

Panel count. Panels across = ceil(target width in mm ÷ panel width), panels high = ceil(target height ÷ panel height). From a diagonal and aspect ratio, width = diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²). Example: a 165-inch 16:9 diagonal → 143.81 × 80.89 in (3.653 × 2.055 m).

Resolution. Wall resolution (px) = wall width (mm) ÷ pixel pitch (mm), rounded. A 6 m (6000 mm) wall at P2.6 → 6000 ÷ 2.6 = 2308 px. Per-panel pixels = panel width ÷ pitch (500 ÷ 2.6 ≈ 192 px).

Viewing distance. Rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance (m) = pixel pitch (mm) — P2.6 → 2.6 m. Comfortable viewing ≈ 2× pitch, fine-detail text ≈ 3× pitch.

Power. Total peak watts = panels × max watts per panel: 84 × 150 W = 12.6 kW. Circuits = ceil(total watts ÷ (16 A × 230 V)) = ceil(12600 ÷ 3680) = 4 circuits.

Curve. Arc angle = arc length ÷ radius (radians), panels = ceil(arc length ÷ panel width), angle per panel = total angle ÷ panels. Example: 10 m arc, 5 m radius → 114.59° total, 20 panels, 5.73° per panel.

Worked example — 6 × 3.5 m wall, P2.6, 500 × 500 mm panels

Panels: 12 across × 7 high = 84 panels (exact 6.0 × 3.5 m, aspect 1.71 ≈ 16:9).

Resolution: 2308 × 1346 px · min viewing distance 2.6 m, comfortable 5.2 m.

Power: 84 × 150 W = 12.6 kW peak → 4 × 16 A / 230 V circuits · weight 84 × 12 kg = 1008 kg.

Budget: 84 × $450 panels + $2,500 processor + 15% install + 10% structure ≈ $50,979.50 (≈ $2,427.60 / m²).

Honest scope

  • Panel dimensions, weights and wattages vary by vendor and model — enter your panel's datasheet values, not just the presets.
  • Power figures here use max wattage. Average show content draws roughly a third of that, but breakers, cable and inrush must be sized for max.
  • Curved results assume uniform cabinet width and ignore rear access, cable bend limits and panel-to-panel angle tolerances — check the cabinet's curve spec.
  • Cost figures are ballpark ranges, never quotes. Shipping, tax, rigging hardware, control PCs and labour vary by region and integrator.

Frequently asked questions

What is an LED video wall calculator?

A planning tool that answers the core questions of an LED wall project: how many LED panels you need for a target width and height, the wall's pixel resolution from its pixel pitch, the minimum viewing distance, total power draw and how many circuits that means, total weight, curved-wall panel layout, and a ballpark budget. This page covers all five in one vendor-neutral lab.

How many LED panels do I need for a 6 x 3.5 m wall?

With standard 500 x 500 mm cabinets: panels across = ceil(6000 / 500) = 12, panels high = ceil(3500 / 500) = 7, so 12 x 7 = 84 panels — an exact 6.0 x 3.5 m wall. With 500 x 1000 mm cabinets laid flat: 12 x 4 = 48 panels. Enter your exact target size and cabinet dimensions in tab 1 of the planner above.

What size are standard LED video wall panels?

The most common cabinets are 500 x 500 mm (rental / touring) and 500 x 1000 mm (fixed installs, fewer seams). Older and fixed-install tiles include 960 x 960 mm, 640 x 480 mm and 576 x 576 mm. Cabinet size matters because the grid layout rounds up: non-standard cabinets produce a slightly larger-than-target wall. Use the custom-size fields for your exact cabinet.

What does pixel pitch (P2.6, P3.9, P4.8) mean?

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centres of two adjacent LED pixels. P2.6 = 2.6 mm. Lower pitch means denser pixels and higher resolution at the same wall size — but also higher cost, power draw and data load. Typical choices: P1.2-P2.6 for close-view indoor, P2.6-P3.9 for conferences and rental, P4.8-P6 for churches and retail, P8-P10+ for outdoor billboards.

How do I calculate LED wall resolution from pixel pitch?

Wall resolution in pixels = wall width in mm divided by pixel pitch in mm, rounded. Example: a 6 m (6000 mm) wall at P2.6 gives 6000 / 2.6 = 2308 px wide. A 3.5 m high wall gives 3500 / 2.6 = 1346 px. Per-cabinet pixels are panel width divided by pitch: 500 / 2.6 is about 192, so real P2.6 cabinets are typically 192 x 192 px. Tab 2 of the planner computes this for any wall size.

What is the minimum viewing distance for an LED video wall?

The industry rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance in metres = pixel pitch in millimetres. A P2.6 wall needs at least 2.6 m; P3.9 needs 3.9 m. Comfortable viewing is about 2x pitch (5.2 m for P2.6), and small text stays sharp up to about 3x pitch. Closer than the minimum, individual pixels become visible; beyond ~3x pitch a finer pitch buys no visible sharpness.

How much power does an LED video wall consume?

Total peak power = number of panels x max watts per panel. Example: 84 panels x 150 W = 12,600 W = 12.6 kW peak. Size breakers and cable for max, not average — average show content draws roughly a third of max, but switch-on inrush and white-screen content can reach peak. Tab 3 converts your panel count to kW and recommends 16 A / 230 V circuits: 12,600 / (16 x 230) = 3.4, rounded up to 4 circuits.

How many circuits does my LED wall need?

Circuits = ceil(total peak watts / (breaker amps x volts)). For a 12.6 kW wall on 16 A / 230 V circuits: ceil(12,600 / 3,680) = 4 circuits. Spread the load evenly across phases and add 20% headroom for inrush current on switch-on. Power distribution must be signed off by a licensed electrician or your AV integrator.

How much does an LED video wall weigh?

Total weight = panels x weight per panel: 84 panels x 12 kg = 1,008 kg — about a tonne. For flown (rigged) walls this is a structural load on the truss and hoists; for ground-stacked walls you need rated stacking frames and ballast. Rigging, truss and hoists must be certified — consult a structural engineer or certified rigger.

How do you calculate a curved LED wall?

Arc angle in radians = arc length / radius; total degrees = angle x 180 / pi; panels along the arc = ceil(arc length / panel width); angle per panel = total degrees / panels. Example: a 10 m arc on a 5 m radius = 114.59 degrees total, 20 panels of 500 mm, 5.73 degrees per panel. Compare the per-panel angle with your cabinet's max curve spec (typically +/-5 to +/-15 degrees per cabinet).

What is the difference between convex and concave LED curves?

Convex curves bow toward the audience (e.g. around a column), concave curves bow away (immersive wrap). Both use the same arc math. Convex cabinets join at their front edges, concave at their rear edges — the cabinet's locking mechanism determines which curves it supports. Tight radii under ~2 m usually need flexible/curvable cabinets rather than standard rigid ones.

How much does an LED video wall cost?

Ballpark: panels ($300-$1,500+ each depending on pitch and indoor/outdoor rating), video processor ($1,500-$8,000), structure and cabling (~10-20% on top), install (~10-20% on top). Example: 84 panels at $450 = $37,800 + $2,500 processor + 15% install + 10% structure = $50,979.50, about $2,427.60 per m2. Rental is typically 3-8% of purchase price per event. Tab 5 builds a full estimate from your numbers.

Indoor vs outdoor LED panels — which do I need?

Outdoor cabinets are far brighter (4,500+ nits vs 800-1,200 nits indoor) and IP65 weather-sealed; they are heavier and 20-40% pricier. Use outdoor only if the wall faces sun or weather — indoors you pay for brightness and sealing you cannot use. The cost estimator lets you set panel price tiers accordingly.

Why do I need a video processor for an LED wall?

LED walls have no tuners or scalers: a video processor (controller) maps your content onto the wall's native pixel grid — e.g. scaling 1080p content to a 2308 x 1346 px wall — handles splicing across sending cards, multi-window layouts and switching between sources. Budget one for every wall, $1,500-$8,000 depending on 4K support and inputs.

LED video wall vs LCD video wall — which is better?

LED walls are seamless (no bezels), scale to any size and aspect ratio, and work outdoors — but cost more per m2. LCD video walls are cheaper per m2 at small sizes but leave visible grid lines from the bezels. This planner is for LED video walls only; the panel math does not apply to LCD tiles.

How accurate is this LED wall planner?

Panel counts, resolution and viewing-distance results are exact arithmetic from your inputs. Power, weight, curve and cost results are planning estimates: per-panel specs vary by vendor and model, so enter your panel's datasheet values and always confirm with your vendor.
