Lbs to PSI Calculator: Convert Force into Pressure
This free lbs to psi conversion calculator is a force to pressure calculator: turn force (lbs, newtons, kgf) plus area (in2, cm2, mm2) into pressure in psi, kPa, bar and MPa. Use it as a lbs per square inch calculator for pounds to psi problems, or run it in reverse: psi + area back to force, psi + force back to area.

Example 5 (metric units): 1,000 N over 20 cm2
A 1,000 N force presses on 20 cm2. Convert both to imperial first, then divide.
Method: how to convert lbs to psi
Converting lbs to psi is a two-step recipe, not a single conversion factor. The core psi formula is force / area:
- Convert force to pound-force. 1 newton = 0.224809 lbf. 1 kgf = 2.20462 lbf. If you already have lbs of force, skip this step.
- Convert area to square inches. 1 cm² = 0.155 in². 1 mm² = 0.00155 in². If you already have in², skip this step.
- Divide. psi = force in lbf ÷ area in in².
The same formula rearranged powers the reverse modes: force (lbs) = psi × area (in²), and area (in²) = force (lbs) ÷ psi. Memorize the psi formula force area trio as one triangle: cover the value you want, and the other two tell you whether to multiply or divide.
Scope note: this tool covers force-to-pressure conversion. If you need mass conversions instead, that is a different tool family (for example lbs to pounds or lbs to stone as mass units).
Frequently asked questions
Why can't you convert lbs to psi directly?
Because lbs and psi measure different things. Lbs (pound-force) measures force, the total push. Psi (pounds per square inch) measures pressure, which is force spread over an area. Any converter that turns lbs into psi without asking for an area is hiding a guess. The honest formula is psi = force in lbs divided by area in square inches.
What is the formula to convert lbs to psi?
psi = force (lbs) / area (in2). Divide the total force in pound-force by the area in square inches that the force acts on. For the reverse direction, force (lbs) = psi x area (in2), and area (in2) = force (lbs) / psi.
How do I convert lbs to psi step by step?
Step 1: get your force in pound-force (convert newtons by dividing by 4.44822, or kgf by multiplying by 2.20462). Step 2: get your area in square inches (convert cm2 by dividing by 6.4516, or mm2 by dividing by 645.16). Step 3: divide force by area. Example: 100 lbs over 10 in2 = 10 psi.
What does psi mean in simple terms?
Psi means pounds per square inch: how many pounds of force push on every single square inch of a surface. 10 psi means each square inch feels a 10-pound push. A car tire at 35 psi pushes outward with 35 pounds on every square inch of the tire wall.
How do I convert psi back to lbs of force?
Multiply pressure by area: force (lbs) = psi x area (in2). Example: a hydraulic cylinder at 75 psi pushing a piston with 8 in2 of area produces 75 x 8 = 600 lbs of force. Use the reverse mode of this calculator for other units.
What is the difference between lbs and psi?
Lbs is the total amount of force, like the full weight of a person standing on a scale. Psi is how concentrated that force is. A 150 lb person on one stiletto heel (about 1 in2) creates about 150 psi, while the same person on two flat shoes (about 40 in2) creates under 4 psi. Same lbs, very different psi.
Can I convert newtons to psi with this calculator?
Yes. Pick newtons (N) as the force unit and the calculator converts to pound-force first (1 N = 0.224809 lbf), then divides by your area. Example: 1,000 N acting over 20 cm2 = 72.52 psi, which is about 500 kPa.
Is 1 lb the same as 1 lbf?
In everyday engineering, yes: when lb is used as a unit of force it means pound-force (lbf). Strictly, the pound is a unit of mass and pound-force is the force that mass exerts under gravity, but in practice 1 lb of force = 1 lbf. This calculator treats lbs input as pound-force.
What does 1 psi feel like?
One psi is one pound of force on one square inch, roughly the pressure of a firm thumb press. It is small on its own, but it adds up: 1 psi over a 12 x 12 inch square (144 in2) is 144 lbs of total force.
How much psi is in a car tire, as a force example?
A typical car tire holds about 32 to 35 psi. If the tire's contact patch is about 30 in2, the tire supports roughly 32 x 30 = 960 lbs of the car's weight. That is why pressure, not just total weight, matters for grip and wear.
How is this used in hydraulics?
Hydraulic force follows the same formula: force (lbs) = pressure (psi) x piston area (in2). A 3,000 psi system acting on a piston with 2 in2 of area delivers 6,000 lbs of force. This is why small high-pressure cylinders can lift heavy loads.
Why does a smaller area create more pressure?
Pressure is force divided by area, so shrinking the area concentrates the same force. 100 lbs on 10 in2 is 10 psi, but the same 100 lbs on 1 in2 is 100 psi. That is why needles, nails and high heels all pierce or dent: tiny area, huge psi.
How accurate is this lbs to psi calculator?
The math is exact: it uses the defined constants 1 lbf = 4.4482216152605 N and 1 in2 = 6.4516 cm2. Real-world results assume the force is spread evenly across the area. If the pressure is uneven (for example a point load), treat the result as an average.
What units does this calculator support?
Force: pounds-force (lbs), newtons (N) and kilogram-force (kgf). Area: square inches (in2), square centimeters (cm2) and square millimeters (mm2). Results show psi plus kilopascals (kPa), bar and megapascals (MPa).
Is this the same as a tire pressure calculator?
No. This tool converts between force and pressure using the formula psi = lbs / in2. A tire pressure calculator adjusts recommended tire pressure for different tire sizes, temperatures and loads. They answer different questions; use both links below as needed.
