Kayak Paddle Length Solver

Paddle length is set by your height and — even more — by your kayak's width. A wider hull sits you farther from the water, so the blade needs more reach. Read your size off the industry chart below.

Weight Capacity Check

Add up everyone + everything in the boat, then compare against the kayak's rated capacity. The honest rule paddlers use: keep your total load at or below ~70% of the rating, and never buy below 1.5× your load. Always confirm on the manufacturer's spec sheet.

Cockpit Size Chart

For sit-inside kayaks, the cockpit opening decides comfort and safety: big enough to exit fast, snug enough to brace with your thighs. Sit-on-tops skip this entirely — they're open deck.

Rule of thumb: you want ~2″ of clearance past your hips, and enough length to slide your legs out in a capsize drill. Dimensions vary by brand — always check the manufacturer's cockpit spec before buying, and sit in the boat if you can.

Methodology & Honest Boundaries

1 · Size matrix (Planner 1)

Length recommendations follow the published Brooklyn Kayak Company sizing guide: paddlers are banded by height/weight (under 5′6″ or under 140 lb → small band; 5′7″–5′10″ / 140–180 lb → medium; over 5′10″ or over 180 lb → large), and each use maps to that guide's water-type length ranges (rivers 8–11 ft, lakes 10–14 ft, sea 12–14+ ft, fishing 10–14 ft), widened slightly for modern hulls. Width ranges are industry-typical per category (recreational 28–32″, touring 24–28″, sea 22–24″, fishing 30–36″). Capacity floors (300/400/450 lb) come from the same guide's camping-capacity row.

Quick reference: recommended length (ft) by use × size band.

2 · Paddle solver (Planner 2)

The chart is the industry standard published by Bending Branches, Aqua-Bound and Werner: height × boat width → centimeters. Style adjustments are the standard guidance: low-angle touring +5 cm, high-angle −10 cm (clamped at 200 cm). Whitewater paddles bypass the chart — paddlers use short 188–203 cm paddles by height band (191–200 cm is the commonly cited typical range).

3 · Capacity check (Planner 3)

The 1.5× rule (rated capacity ≥ 1.5 × total load) is the paddler-community rule of thumb for comfortable, safe loading. The comfort bands are our honest framing: ≤70% of rating = comfortable, 70–85% = near the limit, >85% = overloaded. Ratings are manufacturer estimates — real-world freeboard matters more than the sticker.

Kayak Sizing FAQ

Straight answers to the questions paddlers actually search.

What size kayak do I need?
It depends on your height, weight and intended use. As a rule of thumb: recreational 10–14 ft, touring 12–16 ft, sea 14 ft and up, whitewater 7–10 ft, fishing 10–14 ft, tandem 12–15 ft. Enter your height and weight in the size finder above for a band-specific length and width recommendation.
What is the standard size of a kayak?
The most common recreational kayak is about 10 ft long and 30 in wide. "Standard" varies by discipline: touring kayaks run 14–16 ft, sea kayaks 16–17 ft, and whitewater boats around 8 ft.
What length kayak do I need for my height?
Under 5'6" tall, pick the shorter end of the range for your use; 5'7"–5'10" the middle; over 5'10" the longer end — for example recreational 10–12, 11–13 or 12–14 ft. Height matters most for leg room in sit-inside kayaks, so tall paddlers should also check cockpit size and footrest reach.
What size kayak do I need for my weight?
Under 140 lb, most kayaks fit — look for at least 300 lb of rated capacity. At 140–180 lb aim for 400 lb capacity; over 180 lb look for 450 lb and 12 ft or longer. Always add your gear weight to your body weight when checking capacity.
How do I size a kayak by height and weight?
Use both together: height selects your size band (small, medium, large) and weight selects the required weight capacity. The matrix in this tool combines the published Brooklyn Kayak sizing chart with paddler size bands, then adds a 1.5× safety factor on capacity.
What size kayak paddle do I need?
Most adult paddlers use a 220–240 cm paddle. Read it off the chart: shorter paddlers and narrower boats take shorter paddles, taller paddlers and wider boats take longer ones. High-angle paddlers subtract about 10 cm; whitewater paddlers use a dedicated short paddle of 188–203 cm.
What length kayak paddle do I need for my height?
Under 5'5": 210–230 cm; 5'5"–5'11": 220–240 cm; 6'0"–6'4": 220–250 cm; over 6'4": 230–250 cm — each adjusted for your kayak's width. Boat width matters as much as height: a wider hull sits you farther from the water.
How long should a paddle be for a kayak?
Long enough that the blade reaches the water with a comfortable, upright posture — too short and your knuckles hit the deck, too long and the paddle feels heavy and clumsy. Recreational paddles are the longest (220–250 cm), touring 210–240 cm, and whitewater the shortest (188–203 cm).
What size paddle do I need for a wide kayak?
Wide kayaks need longer paddles because the hull holds you farther from the water. On a 28"+ wide boat most adults use 230–250 cm; fishing kayaks (30–36" wide) typically pair with 230–250 cm paddles.
Do I need a different paddle for sea kayaking vs whitewater?
Yes. Sea and touring kayaking use longer paddles (210–240 cm) tuned for efficiency over distance, while whitewater paddling uses short, powerful paddles of 188–203 cm for quick strokes and bracing.
What size kayak is best for beginners?
A 10–12 ft recreational sit-on-top, 28–32 in wide: stable, easy to get in and out of, and forgiving while you learn strokes. Avoid long narrow sea kayaks until your balance and rescue skills are solid.
What size kayak do I need for fishing?
A 10–14 ft fishing kayak, 30–36 in wide, with rated capacity of at least 1.5× your body weight plus gear. Wider hulls trade speed for the stability you need to cast and land fish.
What size kayak for a 6-foot tall person?
Recreational 12–14 ft, touring 14–16 ft, sea 14–17 ft. For sit-inside boats, tall paddlers should also look for a large keyhole or open cockpit for knee room and check that the footrests reach.
What is a good kayak weight capacity?
Choose a kayak rated for at least 1.5× your body weight plus gear. The capacity check above shows whether a rated boat sits in the comfortable zone (loaded to 70% of its rating or less) — always verify against the manufacturer's spec sheet.
How do I measure a kayak cockpit size?
Measure the inside opening of the cockpit: length from bow to stern, and width side-to-side at the widest point. A standard keyhole cockpit is about 32" × 18", an ocean cockpit about 24" × 16", and open recreational cockpits 38"+ × 20"+.
What size tandem or inflatable kayak do I need?
Tandem: 12–15 ft long, 30–34 in wide, rated for both paddlers plus gear (450 lb minimum). Inflatable: 8–12 ft, 30–36 in wide — sized a touch shorter because the fat tubes add stability. For tandems, always size capacity for the combined crew weight.
