Why JSONL (Newline Delimited JSON) is Essential for AI & Big Data
Traditional JSON requires an entire array of objects to be enclosed in brackets [ {...}, {...} ]. When loading large datasets (such as 10GB of fine-tuning conversations or event logs), standard JSON parsers must load the complete byte string into memory before parsing a single object, leading to severe Out-Of-Memory (OOM) crashes.
JSONL (JSON Lines) formats each record on its own separate line without commas. Stream consumers like Python generators, BigQuery batch loaders, and OpenAI fine-tuning APIs process files line-by-line in constant O(1) memory.
Comparison: JSON vs JSONL
- Standard JSON: Requires valid closing brackets, commas between items, and fails parsing if any trailing comma is present.
- JSONL (NDJSON): Each newline marks an independent JSON document. Easy to append new records with
echo $obj >> data.jsonl.
