What this tool is (and is not)
This tool is a pure time-unit converter: hours to minutes, seconds, days, weeks, months, and years, plus decimal-hours to HH:MM:SS and a quick hourly-rate x hours pay figure.
- Not a billable hours calculator: for timesheets, invoicing, and client billing, use the free billable hours calculator.
- Not a salary converter: for annual salary to hourly rate (and back), use the salary hourly calculator.
- Not a paycheck estimator: for taxes, deductions, and net pay, use the take-home pay calculator.
Hour converter questions
How many minutes are in an hour?
There are exactly 60 minutes in one hour. So 2 hours = 120 minutes, 1.5 hours = 90 minutes, and 0.25 hours = 15 minutes. Use the converter above: enter hours, select "hour" to "minute".
How many seconds are in an hour?
One hour contains exactly 3,600 seconds (60 minutes x 60 seconds). One full day (24 hours) is 86,400 seconds, and one week is 604,800 seconds.
How many hours are in a day, a week, a month, and a year?
There are 24 hours in a day and 168 hours in a week (24 x 7). An average month (30.44 days) has 730.56 hours, and an average year (365.25 days) has 8,766 hours.
How do I convert decimal hours to HH:MM:SS time format?
Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes, and the leftover decimal by 60 to get seconds. Example: 1.5 hours = 1 hour + 0.5 x 60 = 1:30:00. Example: 2.75 hours = 2:45:00. Type any decimal in the "Decimal hours to time" tab to convert instantly.
How do I convert HH:MM:SS to decimal hours?
Divide minutes by 60 and seconds by 3,600, then add the hours. Example: 1:30:00 = 1 + 30/60 = 1.5 hours. Example: 2:15:30 = 2 + 15/60 + 30/3600 = 2.258333 hours. The converter also accepts M:SS (e.g. 45:00 = 0.75 hours).
Why does this calculator use 30.44 days for a month and 365.25 days for a year?
Months and years are averages because calendar months have 28-31 days and years have leap years. 365.25 days per year accounts for the extra leap day every 4 years, and 30.44 days per month is the yearly average. Note: 12 average months = 365.28 days, which is 0.03 days (43.2 minutes) more than one average year - a harmless rounding artifact of using two averages.
How do I convert hourly pay to salary?
This tool's "Hours to pay" tab computes gross pay as hourly rate x hours worked - for example $25/hour x 40 hours = $1,000. For full salary-to-hourly conversion (annual salary, work weeks per year, overtime), use the dedicated salary hourly calculator instead.
What is the difference between this tool and a billable hours calculator?
This is a pure time-unit converter: hours to minutes, seconds, days, weeks, months, years, plus decimal-to-time and a quick rate x hours pay figure. A billable hours calculator is an invoicing tool - it tracks work sessions, rounds time entries, applies rates and taxes, and generates client invoices. If you need invoicing, use a billable hours calculator.
How do I calculate pay for a shift from hours worked?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours worked. Example: $20/hour x 8.5 hours = $170. If your timesheet shows 8:30 (8 hours 30 minutes), first convert to decimal hours: 8:30 = 8.5 hours. Then $20 x 8.5 = $170 gross pay for the shift.
How many minutes is 2.5 hours? What about 0.1 hours?
2.5 hours = 150 minutes (2.5 x 60). 0.1 hours = 6 minutes (0.1 x 60). Common payroll conversions: 0.25 h = 15 min, 0.5 h = 30 min, 0.75 h = 45 min, 1/3 h = 20 min, 1/6 h = 10 min.
Is this hour converter accurate?
Yes. Conversions between seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks are exact by definition (60, 3,600, 86,400, 604,800 seconds). Month and year conversions use the documented averages (30.44 days and 365.25 days), which is the standard convention for general-purpose time conversion.
Can I use this converter for payroll calculations?
Yes, for the time-math part: converting timesheet entries like 7:45 to 7.75 decimal hours, or computing gross pay as rate x hours. Example: 40 hours at $22.50/hour = $900. For tax withholding, deductions, and net pay, use a dedicated paycheck calculator.
How many seconds are in a day and in a week?
One day has 86,400 seconds (24 x 3,600) and one week has 604,800 seconds (7 x 86,400). One average year has 31,557,600 seconds.
Does this hour converter work offline?
Yes. The entire converter runs in your browser with no server, no tracking, and no network requests. Once the page loads, you can disconnect from the internet and every conversion still works instantly.
