GST QST Calculator Quebec

Add or remove Quebec sales tax instantly: 5% GST (federal) + 9.975% QST (provincial) = 14.975% combined. Includes a reverse tax calculator and a Canada province comparison mode.

How GST and QST are calculated in Quebec

Quebec is the only province with two separate sales taxes instead of a harmonized HST. Both apply to the pre-tax selling price:

GST = price × 0.05  •  QST = price × 0.09975  •  Total = price × 1.14975

Common mistake: many calculators apply QST on top of the GST-inclusive price (tax on tax). That rule ended on January 1, 2013: Revenu Québec moved the QST base to the selling price before GST and raised the rate from 9.5% to 9.975% so the total stayed the same. This calculator uses the current rule — on $100 the correct total is $114.98, not $115.47.

Frequently asked questions

What is the sales tax rate in Quebec in 2026?

The combined sales tax rate in Quebec is 14.975%: 5% federal GST plus 9.975% provincial QST. Both taxes apply to the price before tax.

Is QST calculated on top of GST in Quebec?

No. Since January 1, 2013, QST is calculated on the selling price before GST, not on the GST-inclusive amount. Both taxes apply directly to the pre-tax price, so they add up rather than compound.

How do I calculate GST and QST on a $100 purchase in Quebec?

Multiply the pre-tax price by each rate: GST is $100 x 0.05 = $5.00, and QST is $100 x 0.09975 = $9.98 after rounding. The total is $100 + $5.00 + $9.98 = $114.98.

How do I remove GST and QST from a tax-included price?

Divide the tax-included price by 1.14975. For example, $114.98 / 1.14975 = $100.00 before tax. The GST is then $5.00 and the QST is $9.98.

What is the combined GST and QST rate — 14.975% or 15%?

Exactly 14.975%: 5% GST + 9.975% QST. It is often rounded to 15% in conversation, but invoices and this calculator use the exact 14.975%.

Who collects GST and QST in Quebec?

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) administers the federal GST, and Revenu Quebec administers the provincial QST. In Quebec, businesses generally register for and remit both taxes through Revenu Quebec.

Does Ontario use GST and QST?

No. Ontario uses the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) at a single rate of 13%, which replaces separate GST and QST charges. Use the Ontario mode above to compare.

How does Quebec sales tax compare to British Columbia?

British Columbia charges 5% GST plus 7% PST (both on the pre-tax price), for a combined 12% — lower than Quebec's 14.975%. Select BC in the province dropdown to compare side by side.

Are all goods and services taxed at the full rate in Quebec?

No. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt under GST/QST rules (for example, basic groceries are generally zero-rated). This calculator assumes the amount you enter is fully taxable.

Can businesses recover the GST and QST they pay?

Yes. GST/HST registrants can generally claim input tax credits for GST paid on business inputs, and QST registrants can claim input tax refunds for QST, subject to the normal rules.

Do I charge QST on sales to customers outside Quebec?

It depends on the place-of-supply rules: QST generally applies to supplies made in Quebec, while sales to other provinces follow different rules. When in doubt, check the Revenu Quebec guidance for your situation.
