Gram to Liter Conversion Calculator

Convert grams to liters and liters to grams for any liquid or powder. Grams measure mass, liters measure volume, so the converter uses the substance's density. Pick a substance from the verified table or enter your own density, and see every calculation step.

Also expressed as US units

The same volume converted to US gallons and US pints (bridges common in recipes and fuel measurements).

Typical values at about 20 C / 68 F. Sources: CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics; Engineering Toolbox; NIST liquid density data; USDA for milk; honey data from the National Honey Board; fuel densities from ASTM D4052 method ranges.

Worked example: 2 kg of flour to liters

How many liters in 2 kilograms of flour?

  1. Convert to grams: 2 kg x 1000 = 2000 g.
  2. Density of spooned all-purpose flour: 0.55 kg/L.
  3. Formula: L = grams / (density x 1000) = 2000 / (0.55 x 1000) = 2000 / 550.
  4. Result: 2 kg of flour is about 3.64 liters.

The formula

Grams to liters: L = grams / (density in kg/L x 1000)

Liters to grams: grams = liters x density in kg/L x 1000

Why this works: 1 liter of a substance with density d kg/L has a mass of d x 1000 grams. Dividing (or multiplying) by that converts between the mass and volume scales.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert grams to liters?

Divide the mass in grams by the density times 1000: liters = grams / (density in kg per liter x 1000). Because grams are a unit of mass and liters are a unit of volume, you must know the density of the substance. For example, 1000 grams of water (density 1.00 kg/L) equals 1.00 liter.

How many liters are in 1000 grams?

It depends on the substance. 1000 grams of water equals exactly 1.00 liter (density 1.00 kg/L). 1000 grams of milk equals about 0.97 liters, 1000 grams of vegetable oil equals about 1.09 liters, and 1000 grams of honey equals about 0.70 liters.

How do you convert liters to grams?

Multiply the volume in liters by the density times 1000: grams = liters x density in kg per liter x 1000. For example, 2 liters of milk (density 1.03 kg/L) equals 2060 grams.

How many grams are in 1 liter?

One liter of water weighs 1000 grams, one liter of milk weighs about 1030 grams, one liter of vegetable oil weighs about 920 grams, and one liter of honey weighs about 1420 grams. Mass per liter is the density of the substance.

How do I convert kilograms to liters?

First convert kilograms to grams (multiply by 1000), then use the formula liters = grams / (density in kg per liter x 1000). A shortcut for water: 1 kilogram of water equals 1 liter.
