How the room calculation works

Each mode adds the published clearance to the equipment footprint. A pool table needs the table plus two cue lengths on every side; a ping pong table needs play clearance behind the ends and along the sides; arcade and seating zones add player or recline space in front; TV and bar modes size a viewing or service zone rather than a whole room. Optionally enter your room's wall-to-wall size for a pass/tight/fail fit verdict.

How much room do you need for a 9-foot pool table?

A 9-foot pool table measures about 9 x 4.5 ft (108 x 54 in). With a standard 58-inch cue you need cue clearance on all sides, so the minimum room is 18 ft 8 in x 14 ft 2 in, about 264 sq ft. Brunswick's buying guide rounds this to 18 x 14 ft. Adding 6-12 inches per side for your backswing makes play more comfortable.

What size room do you need for a ping pong table?

A regulation ping pong table is 9 x 5 ft (2.74 x 1.525 m per ITTF). For comfortable home play allow 5 ft of clearance behind each end and 3 ft on each side, which gives a room of 19 x 11 ft (228 x 132 in, 209 sq ft). For casual play you can shrink clearances to 4 ft behind the ends and 2.5 ft on the sides; competitive practice wants 6 ft and 4 ft.

How much space does a foosball table need?

A regulation foosball table is 56 x 30 in. Allow 2.5 ft on each side for the rods plus player stance and 2 ft at each end for ball retrieval, which gives a room of 8 ft 8 in x 7 ft 6 in (65 sq ft). This matches manufacturer guidance: Barrington recommends 9 x 7.5 ft and Emerald Billiards recommends 7 x 8 ft for a regulation table. A compact 52-inch table fits in about 8 ft 4 in x 6 ft 8 in.

How much space does an arcade cabinet need?

A full-size upright arcade cabinet has a footprint of about 30 x 30 in (the classic Centipede cabinet is 24.75 x 30 in; modern kits run 22-31 in wide). Plan 3 ft of standing space in front of the machine and a 6-inch gap between cabinets. Three full-size cabinets in a row need a zone of about 8 ft 6 in x 5 ft 6 in. Cocktail-table cabinets are wider (about 33 x 44 in) but players sit around them.

How far should you sit from a TV in a game room?

For a 1080p HD TV, sit 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal away: a 55-inch TV works best at 6 ft 11 in to 11 ft 6 in. For 4K you can sit closer, 1 to 1.5 times the diagonal: a 55-inch 4K TV at 4 ft 7 in to 6 ft 11 in. The SMPTE reference distance is 1.6x the diagonal (7 ft 4 in for 55 in) and THX's cinema-like recommendation is 1.2x (5 ft 6 in).

How much space do you need for a home bar area?

Per NKBA kitchen planning guidelines, allow 24 inches of bar length per person, a bar height of 42 inches (counter height is 36 inches), a 12-inch knee overhang at bar height, and 32 inches of clearance behind seated guests. A 4-person bar-height setup needs an 8 ft bar with 30-inch stools, inside a zone about 7 ft 2 in deep.

How much space does game room seating need?

Allow about 30 inches of width per recliner or lounge chair. A recliner takes roughly 6 ft of depth when reclined, so plan a 5 ft row pitch per row plus a 3 ft walkway. For example, 6 recliners in two rows of three need a zone of 7 ft 6 in x 13 ft (98 sq ft). Bar stools are tighter at 24 inches per seat and a 3 ft pitch.

Can one game room fit a pool table, ping pong table, and seating together?

Add each zone's minimum dimensions from this calculator, then add at least 3 ft of circulation walkway between zones. For example, a 9-ft pool zone (18 ft 8 in x 14 ft 2 in) plus a ping pong zone (19 x 11 ft) side by side needs roughly 19 x 28 ft with a walkway between them. Measure wall to wall and subtract doors, columns, and furniture before committing.

What are good space-saving options for a small game room?

Use a 7-foot pool table (room 16 ft 8 in x 13 ft 4 in with a 58-inch cue), a compact 52-inch foosball table (about 8 ft 4 in x 6 ft 8 in), or shorter 52- or 48-inch cues to shave 6-12 inches off each pool-table side. Cocktail-table arcade cabinets and wall-mounted folding ping pong tables also cut the footprint nearly in half.

Do these room sizes include furniture like cue racks and sofas?

No. Every zone in this calculator covers only the equipment plus its required play clearance. Add furniture separately: cue racks need about 1 ft of wall, and sofa or spectator seating needs its own zone from the seating mode plus a 3 ft walkway. Always verify against your actual wall-to-wall measurements before buying equipment.
