GAA Calculator — Goals Against Average

The goalie stat, done right: goals against average for soccer, ice hockey, lacrosse & field hockey — plus save percentage, all in one page.

Formula:
GAA = (Goals Allowed × Period Minutes) ÷ Minutes Played
Example: a soccer keeper conceding 12 goals in 1080 minutes plays a 90-minute game, so GAA = (12 × 90) ÷ 1080 = 1.00.

Frequently asked questions

How is goals against average (GAA) calculated?

GAA = (Goals Allowed × Period Minutes) ÷ Minutes Played. For example, a soccer goalkeeper who concedes 12 goals in 1080 minutes plays 90-minute games, so GAA = (12 × 90) ÷ 1080 = 1.00.

What period should I use for my sport?

Soccer uses 90 minutes; ice hockey, lacrosse and field hockey use 60 minutes. For example, a hockey goalie allowing 15 goals in 1200 minutes has a GAA of (15 × 60) ÷ 1200 = 0.75. Use the custom period option for anything else (e.g. 20-minute futsal periods).

How is save percentage calculated?

Save percentage = Saves ÷ Shots faced. For example, 85 saves from 100 shots faced is a save percentage of 85.0% (0.850). A perfect record of 30 saves from 30 shots is 100.0% (1.000).

What is a good GAA?

Lower is better: a GAA under 1.00 over a full soccer season is elite, and in ice hockey a GAA under 2.50 is generally considered strong. Always compare within the same league and era, because scoring levels differ.

Why does GAA use minutes instead of games?

Using minutes is fairer because goalies rarely play every full game — substitutions, injuries and overtime change actual time on the field. Minutes played captures true workload, while games played would distort the average.
