Frequently asked questions
How tall should a floor lamp be?
For a standard 8-foot ceiling, choose a floor lamp 58″ – 64″ tall overall (about 147–163 cm). That 58–64 inch band is the consensus across lighting guides and retailer buying guides. If your ceilings are 10 feet or higher, go taller: 64″ – 72″ keeps the lamp in proportion to the room.
Where should the bottom of a floor lamp shade sit?
At or just above your seated eye level. Ergonomic data puts seated eye level at roughly 42″ – 52″ from the floor (about 46″ for an average adult), so a shade bottom near 46″ – 52″ avoids glare: if the shade sits below eye level you will see the bare bulb. This calculator flags any shade more than 2 inches below eye level as a glare risk.
What size floor lamp works with high ceilings?
Scale the lamp with the ceiling: around 0.75× the ceiling height is a common guideline, clamped to sensible bands. An 8-foot (96″) ceiling pairs with 58″ – 64″; a 9-foot ceiling with about 61″ – 68″; and a 10-foot ceiling with 64″ – 72″. The lamp should stay at or under three-quarters of the wall height so it does not look cramped.
How do I size an arc floor lamp?
Size it by reach first, height second. The horizontal reach of the arc must be at least the distance from the base to the seat it lights (for example 36″ of reach for a seat 36″ away). Typical arc lamps stand 72″ – 84″ tall at the pole with the light head hanging 60″ – 65″ above the floor — high enough to clear a seated person, but never route an arc over a walkway: the head will not clear the 80″ standard headroom.
What height torchiere floor lamp for an 8-foot ceiling?
60″ – 72″. Torchieres bounce light off the ceiling, so the top of the lamp needs roughly 24″ of breathing room below the ceiling — on a 96″ ceiling that caps the lamp at 72″. On a lower 7-foot (84″) ceiling, stick to about 60″ so the uplight has room to spread.
How high should a reading floor lamp head be?
Position the light head 58″ – 66″ above the floor, which works out to about 12″ – 16″ above your seated eye level. With a typical 46″ eye level that means a 58″ – 62″ head height; with a 48″ eye level, 60″ – 64″. Too low and the bulb shines in your eyes; too high and the light never reaches your book.
What size shade fits a 60-inch floor lamp?
About 14″ – 16.4″ in bottom diameter and 10″ – 14″ tall. Floor lamp shades run roughly a quarter of the lamp's total height in diameter (retailer specs cluster at 14″ – 18″), and general guidance says a floor lamp shade should be 18″ or larger at most — so a 64″ lamp takes up to a 17.4″ shade.
Can I put a floor lamp in a walkway?
Only if the shade bottom clears 80″ (6 ft 8″) — the standard interior door headroom. A typical 64″ floor lamp with its shade bottom around 46″ fails that check by a wide margin, so keep standard floor lamps in corners and beside seating, never in traffic paths where someone could walk into the shade or hot bulb.
How is this different from a table lamp size calculator?
Table lamps sit on furniture (nightstands, desks, consoles) and are sized relative to that surface; floor lamps stand on the floor and are sized against ceiling height, seated eye level, and headroom. The two do not overlap — for lamps that sit on tables, use our table lamp size calculator instead.
Looking for table lamps instead?
This calculator covers floor lamps — lamps that stand on the floor. Lamps that sit on furniture (nightstands, desks, consoles) follow different proportion rules. Size those with our table lamp size calculator.
