Frequently asked questions about ELSS

The answers below are educational and are not professional investment or tax advice.

Q1. What is ELSS?

ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) is an Indian equity mutual fund that invests most of its corpus in equities. Its defining traits: a mandatory 3-year lock-in, and investments eligible for the Section 80C tax deduction (maximum Rs 1.5 lakh per tax year, only under the old tax regime).

Q2. How is the 3-year lock-in calculated for SIP investments?

Each SIP installment has its own 3-year lock-in counted from that installment’s allotment date, on a FIFO basis. Example: the January 2026 installment is redeemable in January 2029, the February 2026 installment in February 2029, and so on. Stopping the SIP does not unlock already-paid installments any sooner.

Q3. How does ELSS differ from a regular equity mutual fund?

Both invest in equities and their value moves with the market. The difference: ELSS is locked for 3 years and gives the Section 80C deduction benefit, while regular funds are generally liquid (redeemable anytime, per scheme terms) but give no 80C tax benefit.

Q4. What is the Section 80C deduction limit?

Maximum Rs 1.5 lakh per tax year, and that is a COMBINED limit for all 80C/80CCC/80CCD(1) instruments — for example, if you put Rs 60,000 in PPF and Rs 1 lakh in ELSS, the deduction is still capped at Rs 1.5 lakh, not the total invested.

Q5. Does the 80C benefit apply under the new tax regime?

No. The Section 80C deduction is only available under the old tax regime. The new tax regime under Section 115BAC does not allow 80C deductions, so the ELSS tax benefit does not apply if you opt for the new regime.

Q6. Can I withdraw ELSS funds before 3 years?

No. During the lock-in, ELSS units can neither be redeemed nor switched to another scheme, even in an emergency or if the fund performs poorly. After 3 years you are free to redeem, but you are not forced to exit — the money can be left to grow.

Q7. What are the risks of investing in ELSS?

ELSS is an equity product, so its value fluctuates with the stock market — it can rise or fall, and the final value can be lower than the capital invested. The return figures in this calculator are purely ILLUSTRATIVE assumptions, not a promise or a guaranteed outcome projection.

Q8. Is this calculator investment or tax advice?

No. This calculator is purely an educational estimation tool. Investment and tax decisions should be discussed with a financial advisor or professional tax consultant who understands your situation and the latest regulations in India.
