How drywall repair pricing actually works

Contractors do not price drywall repair by the hour for routine patch work — they price by patch size, then add line items for texture matching and paint, then multiply by their market. The formula this calculator uses:

per patch = (size base + texture adder + paint adder) × region × 1.25 if ceiling
additional patches = per patch × 0.85  (15% multi-patch discount)
job total = sum of patches, floored at the $175 minimum charge
shown range = total ± 10%

The size classes come from a working contractor's catalog: small under 6 inches, medium 6–12 inches, large 12–24 inches, full panel (ScopeRescue's regional cost data, captured October 2026). Their Brooklyn catalog prices — small $142.50, medium $262.50, large $427.50, full panel $637.50 — are high-cost-metro figures, so this engine de-rates them by the high-cost regional factor (1.30) to a national baseline, then re-applies your region. Spot-check: medium at high-cost = $262.50 ÷ 1.30 × 1.30 = $262.50. The math round-trips to the source.

National baseline prices by patch size

Damage classTypical sizeBase (avg US)Source check
Small patchUnder 6 in$110Brooklyn $142.50 ÷ 1.30; Worcester small $125–$300
Medium patch6–12 in$202Brooklyn $262.50 ÷ 1.30; SoCal medium $200–$300
Large patch12–24 in$329Brooklyn $427.50 ÷ 1.30
Full panel4×8 ft sheet$490Brooklyn $637.50 ÷ 1.30
Crack repairPer linear ft$10/ftBrooklyn $12.75/ft ÷ 1.30
Corner beadPer linear ft$14.50/ftBrooklyn $18.75/ft ÷ 1.30

These are labor-plus-materials planning figures for an average market. High-cost metros multiply by 1.30, low-cost regions by 0.75 — the same job priced $702 in Brooklyn and $412 in San Antonio in the source data (a 1.70× spread, matching 1.30 ÷ 0.75 = 1.73).

Why the minimum charge decides small jobs

A $50 patch loses money. Each coat of joint compound must dry — usually overnight — before sanding and the next coat, so a "quick patch" is really two or three site visits. Fuel, insurance, and scheduling overhead do not shrink because the hole is small.

Published minimums back this up: Southern California shops quote $150–$250, national guides $100–$200 per visit. This calculator floors every job at $175 and flags it when the minimum kicks in, so a $110 small patch shows as $175 instead of a fantasy number no contractor would honor.

What the minimum covers: one trip for the patch + mud, a return trip to sand and finish, basic materials, and the contractor's mobilization. Texture and paint are still extra.

Texture matching: the line item that hides the repair

Two things swing a drywall quote more than size: the wall texture, and whether the repair must hide inside the existing paint. A smooth wall needs only a flat finish; orange peel and knockdown must be re-sprayed to blend; heavy custom textures are artisan work.

TextureAdder per patchNotes
Smooth+$0Sand flat, prime, done.
Orange peel+$25Spray can or hopper; must match droplet density.
Knockdown+$45Sprayed then flattened; more forgiving than orange peel.
Heavy / custom+$75Hand-troweled or historic patterns; practice on scrap first.

Los Angeles contractors report $100–$300 per patch for texture matching in high-cost markets, and a Phoenix-area shop lists $150–$600 per job — both consistent with these adders after the 1.30 regional multiplier.

Worked examples (from the calculator engine)

Example A — medium patch, textured, average market

A fist-sized hole (8 in), orange-peel texture, spot touch-up paint, average US metro, one patch.

(202 + 25 + 35) × 1.00 = $262.00 → shown range $236–$288. DIY materials would be about $45, a $217 saving if you do it yourself.

Example B — two large ceiling patches, high-cost metro

Two large knockdown patches on a ceiling, full-wall repaint, high-cost region.

unit = (329 + 45 + 120) × 1.30 × 1.25 = $802.75
patch 2 = 802.75 × 0.85 = $682.34 → total $1,485.09, range $1,337–$1,634.

DIY vs pro: the gate

Small smooth holes are the best DIY value in home repair — about $15 in materials against a $175 pro minimum. The gate below is built into the calculator:

SituationVerdictWhy
Small hole, smooth or orange peelDIY$15–$30 in materials; one afternoon.
Medium hole, texturedDIY possible$30–$45 in materials; texture takes practice.
Large patch or full panelDIY possible$55–$75 in materials; heavy, needs a helper.
Water damage or moldHire a proFix the moisture source first; mold needs remediation.
Full panel on a ceilingHire a proHeavy overhead work; two-person job minimum.

DIY material benchmarks (2026): patch kits $10–$25, drywall sheets $10–$20 per 4×8 panel, joint compound $5–$15 per tub, tape $3–$8 per roll, texture kits about $15. Pros typically charge $50–$80 per hour when they bill hourly at all.

Drywall repair cost FAQs

How much does drywall repair cost on average?
For a professional in 2026: a small patch (under 6 inches) typically bills the $175 minimum trip charge; a medium patch (6-12 inches) runs about $262 ($236-$288) with texture and touch-up paint; a large patch (12-24 inches) about $329; a full panel replacement about $490 ($441-$539). These are national-baseline figures with a +/-10% local band. A Worcester, MA 2026 price guide lists small $125-$300, medium $300-$600, and large $600-$1,200+, so always get 2-3 local quotes — these are planning estimates, not bids.
How much does it cost to fix a small drywall hole (under 6 inches)?
The bare math for a small smooth patch is $110, but it lands on the $175 minimum service charge (typical range $158-$193), because a contractor still makes 2-3 trips for mud coats that must dry between visits. Most shops publish minimums of $150-$250 (Southern California) or $100-$200 nationally. DIY is about $15 for a patch kit — the cheapest win in home repair.
How much does a medium drywall patch (6-12 inches) cost?
About $262 ($236-$288) with orange-peel texture and touch-up paint at average US rates, or $340.60 in a high-cost metro. Southern California contractors list medium holes at $200-$300, which matches this engine baseline. With knockdown instead of orange peel it becomes $282 at average rates.
What does a full drywall panel replacement cost?
About $490 ($441-$539) for a standard wall panel, finished smooth with no paint, at average US rates. A worst-case job — a moldy ceiling panel in a high-cost region with orange-peel texture and full-wall repaint — prices at $1,031.88 ($929-$1,135). Panels beat patches on price per square foot when damage exceeds about 2x2 feet.
Why do drywall contractors charge a minimum fee?
Because of the return trips. Each coat of joint compound must dry (usually overnight) before sanding and the next coat, so a 30-minute patch is really two or three site visits. A $50 patch loses money once you count fuel, insurance, and scheduling overhead — that is why reputable shops set minimums of $100-$200 (up to $250 in expensive markets). This calculator floors any job under $175 and tells you when the minimum kicked in.
How much extra does drywall texture matching cost?
Per patch at national baseline: orange peel +$25, knockdown +$45, heavy/custom texture +$75. In high-cost markets the same line item runs $100-$300 per patch (Los Angeles) or $150-$600 per job (Phoenix area). Texture is the line item that decides whether you can see the repair from the doorway — skim it only if the whole wall is being retextured.
Does painting add much to the drywall repair cost?
Spot prime plus touch-up adds $35 per patch; repainting the full wall adds $120. For example, a large knockdown patch at $374 becomes $494 with full-wall paint. Touch-up paint only hides the repair if the existing paint is recent — older paint has faded, and pros then recommend the full wall.
Is ceiling drywall repair more expensive than wall repair?
Yes — overhead work is slower and gravity fights the mud, so this engine multiplies ceiling jobs by 1.25. A small ceiling patch still lands on the $175 minimum (1.25 x $110 = $137.50, floored), but on large jobs the difference is real: two large knockdown ceiling patches in a high-cost region price at $1,485.09.
Do I get a discount for multiple drywall patches in one visit?
You should — mobilization, setup, and the texture/paint kit are shared across patches. This calculator prices the first patch at full rate and each additional patch 15% off. Example: three small knockdown patches with touch-up paint in a low-cost region total $384.76 ($142.50 + $121.13 + $121.13), versus $427.50 with no multi-patch discount.
Should I DIY drywall repair or hire a pro?
Use the gate in the calculator: small smooth holes are safe DIY (about $15 in materials versus a $175 pro minimum); medium or textured patches are DIY-possible ($30-$45 in materials — a medium patch saves about $217 doing it yourself). Hire a pro for water-damaged or moldy drywall (the moisture source must be fixed first), full ceiling panels (heavy overhead work), or any texture you cannot practice on a scrap board first.
How much does drywall crack repair cost?
Cracks are priced by the foot: $10 per foot at national baseline. Twenty feet of cracks with touch-up paint runs $235 ($212-$259), including DIY materials of about $72. Short runs hit the minimum charge — 8 feet prices at $175 ($158-$193). Hairline cracks from settling are cheap; cracks that keep growing after repair signal movement and deserve professional assessment before you pay for cosmetics.
My drywall is water-damaged or moldy. Does this calculator apply?
Only partly. It prices the drywall replacement itself — a large water-damaged patch runs about $329 for the pro repair — but moldy drywall is a remediation job (containment, HEPA filtration, treatment, full replacement), not a patch job, and water damage means drying equipment plus fixing the leak source. For those, use our mold remediation cost calculator and our water damage restoration cost calculator instead.
