Dress size converter

Two ways to your size: convert a label you already own, or enter your body measurements.

Label size, e.g. 8.

Worked example: converting a US 8

A dress labeled US 8

Look it up in the conversion table below, or enter 8 in the converter above with system US.

UK 12 · EU 40 · FR 40 · IT 46 · AU 12 · JP 13 · alpha M

Standard body measurements: 36 / 28 / 38.5 in (91.4 / 71.1 / 97.8 cm) bust / waist / hips.

The math behind the table is simple for three systems: UK = US + 4, EU = US + 32, IT = US + 38. The rest (FR, AU, JP, alpha) come from the standard retail ladder in the chart below.

Two systems need a footnote: some published charts list IT one size lower (US 8 → IT 44) and JP two sizes lower (US 8 → JP 11) than the retail standard used here. When a Japanese or Italian store chart disagrees with this table, trust the store chart.

Worked example: finding your size from measurements

Bust 37 in, waist 31 in, hips 43 in

Each measurement points near a size: bust → US 10, waist → US 12, hips → US 14. The rule is to size up to the largest.

Recommended: US 14 · UK 18 · EU 46 · alpha L — driven by the hips, flagged between sizes

The tool reports exactly that: recommendation US 14 with a between sizes note, so the safe move is the 14 with a small waist alteration rather than squeezing into a 12.

How to measure yourself for a dress

  1. Bust: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level across your shoulder blades. Do not pull tight — the tape should just touch the skin.
  2. Waist: find the narrowest point of your natural waistline (usually near the navel), keep the tape snug but not tight, and breathe normally. This single number drives most dress sizing.
  3. Hips: stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips, tape level all the way round. For fitted or bodycon dresses this number matters as much as the waist.

Measure over thin clothing or undergarments similar to what you will wear with the dress, and write the numbers down in inches — the converter above turns them into centimeters and every international size automatically.

Plus-size (W) chart

Plus sizes are graded on a different curve than misses — a 16W is cut roomier than a misses 16. Use this chart directly instead of converting.

Petite and tall sizes

  • Petite (P): same bust, waist and hip numbers as the misses chart, but shorter hemlines, sleeves and torso — made for shoppers 5′3″ and under. A petite 8 and a misses 8 share the conversion table above.
  • Tall: same circumferences with longer hemlines, sleeves and torso. If a brand offers tall sizes and you are over about 5′8″, prefer tall over sizing up.

Fit tips that actually matter

  • Size up when between sizes. Taking a dress in at the waist or hem is a cheap alteration; letting one out is often impossible.
  • Vanity sizing is real. Brands shift labels by up to an inch, so a US 8 from one store can measure like a US 10 from another. Your tape measurements beat the label.
  • Stretch forgives. Knits and fabrics with elastane tolerate a smaller size; woven fabrics with no stretch do not.
  • Check the store chart last. Use this page to learn your standard size, then compare your measurements against the specific brand chart before checkout.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a US dress size to a UK size?

Add 4: UK = US + 4. A US 8 is a UK 12, a US 12 is a UK 16, and a US 00 is a UK 2. UK and AU sizes use the same numbering in this chart, so a US 8 is also AU 12.

What is a US size 8 in EU, FR, IT and JP sizes?

A US 8 is EU 40, FR 40, IT 46 and JP 13, with an international alpha size of M. The standard body measurements for this size are about 36 / 28 / 38.5 inches (91.4 / 71.1 / 97.8 cm) for bust / waist / hips.

How do I find my dress size from my body measurements?

Measure your bust, waist and hips, then let the largest measurement set the size — dresses are graded from the waist, and taking a dress in is easier than letting it out. For example, 37 / 31 / 43 inches gives US 14 (UK 18, EU 46, FR 46, IT 52, JP 19, alpha L): the hips drive the recommendation, and the tool flags it as between sizes, so sizing up and planning a small alteration is the safe call.

What is the difference between misses, petite and plus sizes?

Misses sizes (US 00–20) are the standard chart on this page. Petite sizes use the same bust, waist and hip numbers but shorter hemlines, sleeves and torsos, made for shoppers 5′3″ and under. Plus sizes (14W–32W) are graded on a different curve with more room through the bust and hips — a 16W is not the same cut as a misses 16, so use the plus chart below instead of converting.

Why does the same size fit differently across brands?

Vanity sizing: brands shift their labels by up to an inch to flatter shoppers, and each brand grades from its own fit model. The chart here is the widely published standard; always compare your tape measurements against the specific brand chart before buying, especially from international stores.

What is a US size 12 in international sizes?

A US 12 is UK 16, EU 44, FR 44, IT 50, AU 16 and JP 17, alpha L. Standard body measurements are about 39 / 31 / 41.5 inches (99.1 / 78.7 / 105.4 cm) for bust / waist / hips.

How do I measure my bust, waist and hips correctly?

Stand relaxed in thin clothing. Bust: tape around the fullest part, level across your shoulder blades. Waist: around the narrowest point of your natural waistline, snug but not tight, breathing normally. Hips: around the fullest part with the tape level. Write the numbers down and enter them above — the converter handles inches or centimeters.

Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?

Size up. A dress that is slightly roomy can be taken in at the waist or hem for a modest alteration cost; a dress that is too tight across the bust or hips cannot be made bigger. If the fabric has stretch (elastane or knit), you can sometimes stay with the smaller size.

What dress size is a 28-inch waist?

A 28-inch waist matches US 8 in the standard chart — that is UK 12, EU 40, FR 40, IT 46, AU 12 and JP 13 (alpha M). A 28-inch waist is 71.1 cm.

Are EU and FR dress sizes the same number?

In the standard chart used here they are: a US 8 is both EU 40 and FR 40. Some published charts differ by one size between the two systems, so treat them as a starting point and confirm against the store chart when the fit has to be exact.

What is the smallest standard dress size?

US 00, the bottom of the misses chart: UK 2, EU 30, FR 30, IT 36, AU 2, JP 3, alpha XXS. Standard body measurements are about 30.5 / 23.5 / 33 inches (77.5 / 59.7 / 83.8 cm) for bust / waist / hips.

Can I trust size charts when shopping online?

Mostly, with one habit: measure yourself first, then compare your numbers to that store own chart instead of trusting the size label alone. Labels drift up to an inch between brands (vanity sizing), while your tape measurements do not. Check the return policy before ordering from a store whose chart you have never tried.
