Frequently Asked Questions

What coins are used in D&D 5e?
Fifth edition uses five coins: the copper piece (cp), silver piece (sp), electrum piece (ep), gold piece (gp), and platinum piece (pp). They follow fixed exchange rates, so any pile of mixed coins can be converted exactly into a single unit.
How many copper pieces are in one gold piece?
Exactly 100. One gold piece equals 10 silver pieces, and one silver piece equals 10 copper pieces, so 1 gp = 10 sp = 100 cp.
What is an electrum piece worth?
One electrum piece is worth 5 silver pieces, which is 50 copper pieces or half a gold piece. Electrum coins are rare in most campaigns and usually appear in old treasure hoards.
How many gold pieces make one platinum piece?
Ten. One platinum piece (pp) is worth 10 gold pieces, 100 silver pieces, or 1,000 copper pieces.
How do I convert a mixed pile of coins into one unit?
Convert everything to copper pieces first: multiply each coin count by its copper value (cp x1, sp x10, ep x50, gp x100, pp x1000), add the results, then divide by the value of the unit you want. For example, 3 gp and 5 sp become 300 + 50 = 350 cp, which is 3.5 gp.
How do you split treasure evenly between party members?
Convert the whole pile to copper pieces, divide by the number of adventurers, and hand each member the whole share; the leftover copper pieces form the remainder. For example, 350 cp split 3 ways gives each member 116 cp (1 gp, 1 sp, 6 cp) with 2 cp left over.
How much do coins weigh in D&D 5e?
Fifty coins of any denomination weigh one pound. A heavy hoard quickly becomes an encumbrance problem, which is why adventurers convert bulky copper and silver into gold and platinum when they can.
Can I have fractions of a coin?
The game rules treat coins as whole pieces, but conversions can produce fractions - for example, 7 electrum pieces convert to 3.5 gp. When that happens, keep the value in copper pieces (350 cp) or break it down into whole coins to stay exact.
