Cross-check with published comparisons: budget101.com cites about $2,592 disposable vs $365 cloth (online article, prices as published); pregnantchicken.com cites $2,000–$3,000 disposable vs $800–$1,000 cloth over ~2.5 years.
Cloth diaper break-even month INVESTMENT MATH
When does the cloth stash pay for itself? Formula: stash cost ÷ (disposable monthly cost − cloth washing monthly cost).
Typical range in published break-even analyses is 6–12 months (see methodology). If you plan a second child, also check the multi-child tab — reusing the stash changes everything.
Diaper brand tier picker STORE VS PREMIUM VS ECO
This is the diaper cost calculator by age in dollar terms: pick any usage total from tab 1 and see all four tiers side by side.
All tiers, same diaper count
| Tier | $/diaper (low–avg–high) | Total | Per month |
|---|
Price tiers reflect typical 2026 public retail pricing (before bulk/box discounts — warehouse clubs can cut these 10–20%). Prices vary by retailer and region.
Multi-child mode CLOTH REUSE
Cloth stash is reused: the second child costs roughly washing only (plus a ~$50 refresh for worn-out inserts). Disposables cost the full amount again.

Disposable scales linearly — every child costs the full amount again. Cloth's marginal cost for child #2 is nearly washing-only.
How the math works — methodology & sources
Usage engine
Each month of age gets a per-day rate from the bracket table (newborn 11/day tapering to 5/day for 24+ months). Diapers for that month = rate × 30.42 days (365/12). The total is the sum over all months from birth to the potty-training age you set. The low/high range repeats the same calculation with the low/high rates. These ranges come from widely published pediatric guidance (newborns needing 10–12 changes per day is standard guidance across AAP parenting resources such as HealthyChildren.org, 2024–2026 publications); exact published tables vary slightly by source, which is why this tool offers low/average/high.
Cost math
Disposable total = total diapers × price per diaper. Cloth total = stash upfront + (washing $/month × months) + one-time accessories. Break-even month = stash ÷ (disposable $/month − washing $/month); if the monthly saving is zero or negative, the result is honestly "never" — not a made-up number.
- Usage rates — general pediatric guidance ranges (AAP/HealthyChildren.org parenting resources, 2024–2026): newborns 10–12 changes/day, tapering to 4–6/day for toddlers; total ≈ 6,000–8,000 diapers to potty training (commonly cited figure).
- Cloth vs disposable totals — budget101.com: ~$2,592 disposable vs ~$365 cloth (online article, prices as published on the page); pregnantchicken.com: $2,000–$3,000 disposable vs $800–$1,000 cloth over ~2.5 years.
- Break-even timing — published break-even analyses (e.g. medium.com parenting cost articles) put cloth break-even at 6–12 months, consistent with this tool's math.
- Retail price tiers — typical 2026 public retail pricing: store/generic ~$0.18–$0.28, premium up to ~$0.60 per diaper, eco/compostable $0.55–$0.80. Prices vary by retailer, region, and bulk discounts.

Frequently asked questions
How many diapers does a newborn use per day?
Newborns typically use 10-12 diapers per day. This diaper usage calculator uses 11 as the average for the newborn month (0-1 month), tapering to 8-10 per day at 1-4 months, 6-8 per day at 5-11 months, 5-7 per day at 12-23 months, and 4-6 per day from 24 months. Choose the low or high setting above to see the full range.
How many diapers does a baby use in total before potty training?
About 6,000 diapers total is the commonly cited figure, ranging roughly 5,100 to 6,900 depending on usage and potty-training age. With this calculator's default settings (average usage, potty training at 30 months) the total is about 6,023 diapers. Earlier potty training (24 months) drops it to about 5,110.
How many diapers per month does a baby use by age?
At average usage: roughly 335 diapers per month for a newborn (0-1 month), about 274 per month at 1-4 months, 213 per month at 5-11 months, 183 per month at 12-23 months, and 152 per month from 24 months onward. See the size-by-size breakdown table in the usage tab.
Are cloth diapers cheaper than disposable diapers?
Usually yes over the full diapering period. Example from this calculator's defaults: about 6,023 diapers at $0.35 each costs about $2,108 disposable, while cloth costs a $450 stash plus $20/month washing for 30 months = $1,050 — a saving of about $1,058 (roughly 50%). Published comparisons agree: budget101.com cites $2,592 disposable vs $365 cloth, and pregnantchicken.com cites $2,000-$3,000 disposable vs $800-$1,000 cloth over about 2.5 years.
How much does it cost to cloth diaper?
A cloth diaper stash typically costs $300-$800 upfront, plus about $15-$25 per month for extra washing (water, energy, detergent). Using mid-range defaults ($450 stash + $20/month over 30 months) the total is about $1,050. Enter your own stash price and washing cost in the comparator tab.
How many months until cloth diapers break even?
Divide the upfront stash cost by the monthly saving (disposable monthly cost minus cloth washing monthly cost). With typical figures — $450 stash, about $70/month disposable, $20/month washing — the break-even point is about 9 months. Most families break even in 6-12 months; the break-even tab computes it for your exact numbers, and tells you honestly if it never breaks even (e.g. very cheap disposables with expensive washing).
How much do diapers cost per month?
The average diaper cost per month runs roughly $80-$100 in the newborn phase at a mid-range $0.35 per diaper, falling to about $53-$65 per month by the toddler phase - about $70 per month averaged over 30 months to potty training. Store-brand diapers ($0.25) cut the monthly average to about $50; eco diapers ($0.65) raise it to about $130.
How much do diapers cost per year?
Averaged over the whole diapering period: about $845 per year at $0.35/diaper (about $2,108 over 30 months). Store-brand ($0.25) is about $603 per year; premium ($0.50) about $1,205 per year; eco ($0.65) about $1,566 per year. The first year is the most expensive because newborns use the most diapers.
What is the difference between store brand and premium diapers in cost?
Over about 6,023 diapers to potty training: store/generic brand at $0.25 per diaper totals about $1,506; mainstream brand at $0.35 totals about $2,108; premium at $0.50 totals about $3,011; eco/compostable at $0.65 totals about $3,915. The tier picker tab shows all four side by side for your diaper count.
How much do eco diapers cost?
Eco, bamboo, and compostable diapers typically cost $0.55-$0.80 per diaper at 2026 retail pricing (midpoint $0.65 used here). Over about 6,023 diapers to potty training that totals roughly $3,915 — about $1,800 more than store brand, or about $130 per month on average.
How many cloth diapers do I need for a second child?
A well-kept cloth stash is typically reused for the second child with almost no new upfront cost — just ongoing washing plus a small refresh (about $50 for worn-out inserts). The marginal cost of diapering a second child in cloth is therefore only about $650 ($600 washing + $50 refresh) versus about $2,108 for disposables again. The multi-child tab models 1-10 children.
How many cloth diapers should I buy for a stash?
Common guidance: 24-36 cloth diapers for full-time use (enough for 2-3 days between washes, since newborns use 10-12 per day). Starter stash prices of $300-$800 reflect buying 24+ diapers plus covers, inserts, and accessories. This cost calculator focuses on the money math — stash size guidance comes from cloth-diaper community sources, not this tool.
What diaper size does my baby need by age?
As a rough age guide used by this tool's size breakdown: Newborn (0-1 month), Size 1 (1-3 months), Size 2 (3-6 months), Size 3 (6-12 months), Size 4 (12-18 months), Size 5 (18-24 months), Size 6 (24+ months). Actual size depends on weight and brand fit — buy one pack before stocking up. The usage tab shows how many of each size you'll need in total.
How is the diaper cost estimate calculated?
Usage: per-day rates by age bracket (11/day newborn down to 5/day toddler) multiplied by 30.42 days per month for each month until the potty-training age you set. Cost: total diapers times your price per diaper. Cloth: stash cost plus washing cost per month times months. Break-even: stash cost divided by (disposable monthly cost minus washing monthly cost). All formulas are shown in the methodology section; sources are cited with publication years.
Is this diaper calculator medical advice?
No. Cost and usage estimates for planning only — prices vary by retailer and region. Usage tables are general pediatric guidance, not medical advice for your child. For diaper rash or skin concerns, consult your pediatrician.
Is my data private in this diaper cost calculator?
Yes. The tool is 100% client-side: every calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere — no accounts, no tracking of your inputs, no external requests.
