Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula

°C → °F: F = (C × 9/5) + 32
°F → °C: C = (F − 32) × 5/9

Worked example: convert 20°C to °F

Multiply 20 by 9/5 to get 36, then add 32: 20°C = 68°F. Going back, (68 − 32) × 5/9 = 20°C.

Why 9/5 and 32? Between water's freezing and boiling points there are 100 Celsius degrees but 180 Fahrenheit degrees (180/100 = 9/5), and the scales are offset by 32 because water freezes at 32°F but 0°C.

Celsius to Fahrenheit FAQs

What is the formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (or 1.8), then add 32: F = (C x 9/5) + 32. For example, 20 degrees Celsius becomes (20 x 9/5) + 32 = 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9 (or 0.5556): C = (F - 32) x 5/9. For example, 68 degrees Fahrenheit becomes (68 - 32) x 5/9 = 20 degrees Celsius.

What is 37 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?

37 degrees Celsius equals 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit: (37 x 9/5) + 32 = 98.6. This is normal human body temperature.

What is 100 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?

100 degrees Celsius equals 212 degrees Fahrenheit: (100 x 9/5) + 32 = 212. This is the boiling point of water at sea level.

What is 0 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?

0 degrees Celsius equals 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the freezing point of water.

What is 350 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?

350 degrees Fahrenheit equals 176.67 degrees Celsius: (350 - 32) x 5/9 = 176.67. This is a common oven temperature for baking.

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?

Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal at -40 degrees: -40 C = -40 F. This is the only point where the two scales cross, which you can verify with the formula: (-40 x 9/5) + 32 = -40.

How can I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head?

Use the quick estimate: double the Celsius value, subtract 10 percent, then add 32. For 20 degrees Celsius: double to 40, subtract 4 to get 36, add 32 to get 68 degrees Fahrenheit, which is exact.

What is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?

98.6 degrees Fahrenheit equals 37 degrees Celsius: (98.6 - 32) x 5/9 = 37. This is normal human body temperature.

What is 212 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?

212 degrees Fahrenheit equals 100 degrees Celsius: (212 - 32) x 5/9 = 100. This is the boiling point of water at sea level.

What is 20 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?

20 degrees Celsius equals 68 degrees Fahrenheit: (20 x 9/5) + 32 = 68. This is a comfortable room temperature.

What is 180 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?

180 degrees Celsius equals 356 degrees Fahrenheit: (180 x 9/5) + 32 = 356. This is a common oven setting for baking cakes.

What is the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit?

Both measure temperature but with different scales. Between the freezing and boiling points of water there are 100 degrees Celsius but 180 degrees Fahrenheit, so one degree Celsius equals 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit. Celsius is used by most of the world and in science, while Fahrenheit is mainly used in the United States.

What is minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?

-4 degrees Fahrenheit equals -20 degrees Celsius: (-4 - 32) x 5/9 = -20.
