Candle Cost Calculator — COGS & Pricing Suite

100% client-side · no signup · your data never leaves this browser

Work out exactly what it costs to make one candle — from the bag of wax you bought, not from a guess — then price it, check platform fees, and find how many you must sell to break even. Six linked tools in one lab: materials builder, labor & overhead, batch costing, pricing engine, platform fee estimator, and break-even. All numbers stay in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Materials builder

Enter what each material cost you to buy — price, package size and unit — plus how much goes into one candle. The tool converts units automatically (oz ↔ g ↔ lb, ml ↔ fl oz…) so a bulk bag of wax becomes an exact per-candle cost.

Labor + overhead

Time a full batch from setup to labeled-and-packed, then divide — setup and cleanup spread out over more candles.

Batch costing

Scale the per-candle cost to a full production batch, including fixed batch costs (test burns, setup, recipe tweaks) that spread over every candle in the batch.

Pricing engine

Start from your all-in cost and price by margin, markup, a simple multiplier, or type your own price to reverse-check it. The 2× and 4× presets double as a quick wholesale price calculator (2×) and retail price calculator (4×).

64% is the craftybase benchmark: an $18 price on a $6.41 candle.

2× = classic wholesale rule, 4× = classic retail rule.

Platform fee estimator

Marketplace fees eat your margin silently. Enter the fee structure of wherever you sell — Etsy defaults are pre-filled — and see your true profit after fees.

Fees are entered manually on purpose: they change, and this tool keeps no fee database. Defaults shown are Etsy's US structure — always confirm on the platform's fee page.

Break-even

How many candles must you sell each month to cover the fixed costs not already in your per-candle overhead?

How the math works

Materials. Unit cost = (purchase price ÷ package size) × amount used per candle, with automatic conversion between weight units (g, kg, oz, lb) and volume units (ml, L, fl oz, tsp, tbsp, cup). When you buy by weight but measure by volume — common with fragrance oil — enter its density (g/ml, typically 0.8–0.95) and the conversion happens across families. The result is your exact candle cost per candle, built from what you actually paid at the supplier.

Labor. (minutes per candle ÷ 60) × hourly rate. Use your real rate, not zero — unpaid labor is the most common reason candle businesses look profitable on paper and lose money in practice.

Overhead. Monthly fixed costs ÷ monthly output, or a percentage of materials. Never double-count the same cost in both the break-even tab and overhead.

Batch. (per-candle cost × candles) + fixed batch costs, then divided by the batch size for the true per-candle cost.

Pricing. Margin pricing: price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). Markup pricing: price = cost × (1 + markup). The 2×/4× rules are just shorthand: wholesale 2× is a 50% margin, retail 4× is a 75% margin. In practice this makes the pricing engine a candle pricing calculator, a candle profit calculator and a candle profit margin calculator in one: enter your price and it shows profit per candle, margin and markup side by side.

Fees. Fee = price × transaction % + price × payment % + payment fixed fee. Defaults mirror Etsy's US structure (6.5% + 3% + $0.25); every value is editable because fees change.

Break-even. Units = fixed costs ÷ (price − per-candle cost), rounded up to whole candles.

Worked example: 8 oz soy candle = $6.41

Here is a full candle making cost breakdown for the published craftybase example of a typical handmade 8 oz soy candle, rebuilt exactly in the materials tab — press Load 8 oz soy example above to reproduce it:

ItemQuantityUnit costPer candle
Soy wax7 oz$0.08/oz$0.56
Fragrance oil0.7 oz (10% load)$0.35/oz$0.25
Wick1$0.15 each$0.15
Wick tab1$0.05 each$0.05
Glass jar (8 oz)1$1.40 each$1.40
Lid1$0.35 each$0.35
Label1$0.25 each$0.25
Packaging (tissue, bag)1 set$0.40$0.40
Materials total$3.41
Labor (12 min @ $15/hr)$3.00
All-in cost$6.41

At an $18 selling price that is a 64% margin — but only if you actually know the $6.41 number. Guessing $3 materials and pricing at $12 leaves you $2.59 per candle before platform fees.
