How it works

Average = total pins ÷ games, shown to 1 decimal.

Handicap = (basis − average) × percentage, rounded to the nearest pin. If your average is at or above the basis, the handicap is 0 — never negative.

handicap = (220 − 200) × 0.90 = 18 pins

FAQ

How do I calculate my bowling average?

Add up the pins from all your games and divide by the number of games. For example, scores of 180, 200 and 220 give 600 total pins over 3 games, which is a 200.0 average.

How is a bowling handicap calculated?

Handicap equals (handicap basis minus your average) multiplied by the handicap percentage. With an average of 200, a 220 basis and 90 percent, the handicap is (220 - 200) × 0.9 = 18 pins.

What happens if my average is above the handicap basis?

Your handicap is 0. A handicap is never negative: bowlers who average above the basis simply receive no handicap pins.

What handicap settings do most leagues use?

A 220 basis with 90 percent is the most common setup, and it is the default in this calculator. You can adjust the basis from 200 to 230 and the percentage from 80 to 100.
