Body Type Calculator
Find your somatotype blend — ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph — from four things you can measure at home: height, weight, wrist circumference, and sex. Includes frame-size classification, ponderal index, and an honest, fully disclosed scoring method.

Worked examples
Every number below was computed by the scoring model itself, then checked against an independent Python oracle. Press “Load into calculator” to replay any example.
Example 1 — Woman, 170 cm, 54 kg, wrist 14 cm
Ectomorph 93 · Mesomorph 22 · Endomorph 11 → Ectomorph (small frame)
BMI 18.69 · ponderal index 44.98 · wrist 5.51 in (small frame for her height). High linearity plus a small frame gives a strongly ectomorphic blend.
Example 2 — Man, 180 cm, 82 kg, wrist 18.5 cm
Ectomorph 38 · Mesomorph 83 · Endomorph 52 → Mesomorph (medium frame)
BMI 25.31 · ponderal index 41.43 · wrist 7.28 in (medium frame). A large-ish frame and weight near the athletic band produce a mesomorph-dominant blend with a secondary endomorph note.
Example 3 — Woman, 160 cm, 78 kg, wrist 16.5 cm
Ectomorph 3 · Mesomorph 78 · Endomorph 87 → Endomorph–Mesomorph blend (large frame)
BMI 30.47 · ponderal index 37.45 · wrist 6.50 in (large frame). Low linearity and higher adiposity give endomorph dominance; the large frame keeps mesomorph high as a close second.
Methodology — exactly what the calculator does
No black box. Every step is disclosed so you can check the math.
BMI = weight_kg / height_m²Ponderal index = height_cm / ∛weight_kg
Step 1 — Frame size from wrist circumference
Frame size uses the standard wrist-based chart (inches of wrist vs inches of height):
| Group | Small frame | Medium frame | Large frame |
|---|---|---|---|
| Women, under 62 in | < 5.5 in | 5.5 – 5.75 in | > 5.75 in |
| Women, 62 – 65 in | < 6.0 in | 6.0 – 6.25 in | > 6.25 in |
| Women, over 65 in | < 6.25 in | 6.25 – 6.5 in | > 6.5 in |
| Men | 5.5 – 6.5 in | 6.5 – 7.5 in | > 7.5 in |
Men's chart is published for heights over 65 in; this calculator applies the same bands at all heights as a documented approximation. Between the small and large cutoffs the frame-ecto score interpolates linearly from 100 to 0.
Step 2 — Three normalized component scores (0–100)
piScore = 100 × (ponderal index − 37) / 9, clamped 0–100bmiScore = 100 × (BMI − 17) / 16, clamped 0–100strength = 100 × (1 − |BMI − 24| / 12), clamped 0–100
Step 3 — Somatotype blend
Ectomorph = round(0.6 × piScore + 0.4 × frameEcto)Endomorph = round(0.7 × bmiScore + 0.3 × (100 − piScore))Mesomorph = round(0.6 × (100 − frameEcto) + 0.4 × strength)
The highest score is your dominant type. If the runner-up is within 15 points, the result is reported as a blend (for example Endomorph–Mesomorph).
The three body types
Everyone is a blend. These are the poles of the model, with practical notes for each.
Ectomorph — linear build
- Narrow shoulders and hips relative to height
- Small joints, small frame score
- High ponderal index: light for their height
- Tends to find gaining mass slower
Notes: progressive strength training 3–4 times per week; a small, consistent calorie surplus with plenty of protein; prioritize sleep. Muscle gain is slow for everyone — consistency over months is the whole game.
Mesomorph — robust build
- Broad shoulders, medium-to-large frame
- Gains muscle relatively easily
- Weight sits near the athletic BMI band
- Can also gain fat quickly when inactive
Notes: balanced strength plus conditioning; do not skip mobility work; schedule lighter weeks because overtraining creeps up. Maintain protein and a steady routine rather than chasing extremes.
Endomorph — rounded build
- Wider frame, lower ponderal index
- Gains both muscle and fat easily
- Carries more mass at any given height
- Often the strongest of the three in the gym
Notes: consistent daily activity plus strength training; nutrition consistency beats crash diets; track weight trends over weeks, not day to day. No body type is better or worse — each has real strengths.
Myths worth dropping
Training, nutrition, sleep, and consistency decide results. The label just describes your starting shape.
Body type is not a health diagnosis. People of every type can be healthy or unhealthy; health is measured by markers, habits, and medical guidance — not by a shape category.
Frame size is mostly fixed, but body composition, strength, and fitness respond to training at every body type. That is where your effort pays off.
Usually it is undereating plus under-training, not a metabolic curse. Track intake honestly for two weeks before blaming genetics.
What this tool is — and is not
- This tool classifies body shape (somatotype: ectomorph / mesomorph / endomorph) from frame size, linearity, and weight-for-height. That is a different question from body composition.
- Body fat percentage measures what share of your mass is fat — a composition question, not a shape question. For that, use our body fat calculator (US Navy, Jackson-Pollock, and Deurenberg methods).
- BMI is a single height-weight ratio used as a rough population screening number: see our BMI calculator. TDEE estimates daily calorie burn: see our TDEE calculator.
- Two people can share the same BMI with completely different somatotype blends. Shape, composition, and energy needs are three separate tools because they answer three separate questions.
Frequently asked questions
What does a body type calculator actually measure?
It combines four things you can measure at home: your height, weight, wrist circumference, and sex. From these it derives your BMI, your ponderal index, which is a measure of how linear your build is, and your frame size from the standard wrist chart. Those feed three descriptive scores, ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. Almost everyone is a blend rather than a pure type.
Is this the same as the Heath-Carter somatotype method?
No. Heath-Carter is the research standard and needs ten measurements, including skinfold calipers, bone breadths, and girths taken by a trained anthropometrist. This calculator is a simplified self-measurement approximation inspired by the same idea. Treat the scores as a rough description of your build, not a clinical somatotype rating.
Can my body type change over time?
Your bone frame barely changes after adulthood, but your scores can shift. Losing or gaining a lot of weight moves the endomorph and ponderal-index components, and building muscle moves the mesomorph component. The result describes your current build, not a permanent label.
Is body type the same as BMI or body fat percentage?
No. BMI and body fat percentage describe body composition, meaning how much mass you carry and what share of it is fat. Body type describes body shape and structure, meaning how linear, robust, or rounded your build is. Two people can share the same BMI with completely different somatotype blends. This tool does classification. For composition, see our body fat calculator.
Does my body type determine my health or fitness results?
No. Somatotypes are descriptive labels, not destiny and not diagnoses. People of every body type can be healthy, strong, and athletic, and people of every body type can develop health problems. Training consistency, nutrition, sleep, and medical care matter far more than which category you fall into. If you have health concerns, talk to a qualified professional, not a body-type label.
How do I measure my wrist circumference correctly?
Use a flexible tape around your wrist just below the bony bumps, on the hand side of the wrist crease. Keep the tape snug but not tight, with your hand relaxed and palm facing up. Measure in the morning before activity, and average two or three tries for a stable number.
