Scoring presets for popular game styles
Every preset is a starting point — rename, add or remove categories freely. The patterns below are inspired by widely played games; names are used nominatively for description only. This tool is not affiliated with or endorsed by any game publisher.
Generic score pad
Round 1–6 plus Bonus and Penalty rows. The universal choice for trick-taking card games, dice games, party games and anything scored per round. Pair it with “lowest score wins” for golf-style games.
Victory-point strategy (Catan-style)
Settlements, Cities, Longest Road, Largest Army, Development Cards, Victory Point Cards and Bonus — the classic settlement-building victory-point pattern. Enter the victory points each element is worth.
Route building (Ticket-to-Ride-style)
Route Segments, Completed Tickets, Missed Tickets (subtract) and Longest Route Bonus — the scoring pattern of Ticket to Ride and similar train-route games. Enter route points directly (for example a 6-segment route scores 15 points) and missed tickets as negatives.
Engine building (Wingspan-style)
Creature Cards, Bonus Cards, End-Round Goals, Eggs, Cached Resources and Tucked Cards — the multi-track scoring pattern of modern engine builders, each track summed separately.
A free alternative to paywalled score-keeping apps
Some score-sheet apps are freemium SaaS products: free to start, but exports and advanced features sit behind a monthly subscription. If all you want is a score pad for game night, here is the honest comparison (competitor details as of October 2026):
| Feature | This tool | maketheboard scoresheet maker |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free forever | Free tier + Pro ≈ $24/mo |
| Sign-up required | No | Yes |
| CSV / data export | Free, unlimited | Paywalled on free tier |
| Printable scoresheet | Built-in print layout + blank sheet | Varies |
| Game-style presets | 4 presets | Custom boards |
| Live share link | No (offline by design) | Yes |
| Works offline | Yes | Requires account/server |
| Privacy | Nothing leaves your browser | Account-based cloud |
Pick the freemium app if you need live share links across devices. Pick this tool if you want a fast, private, genuinely free score pad with printable sheets and free CSV export.
How the score calculator works
Totals
Each player's total is the sum of their per-category scores. Empty cells count as zero; negative values in penalty categories subtract. Decimals are supported and totals keep full precision.
Rankings
Players are ranked by dense ranking: 1, 2, 2, 3 — players with exactly equal totals share a rank and are all highlighted as winners. With “lowest score wins” on, the order flips so the smallest total ranks first (golf-style).
Tie-breaks
Choose any category as the tie-break (e.g. Longest Road). Tied players are then ordered by that category and receive distinct ranks — the standard board-game-night way to settle a dead heat.
Stats
The stats panel shows per-category totals and averages across players, plus each player's average, strongest and weakest category, and margin behind the leader — handy for settling “who dominated the routes?” debates.
CSV format
The export is a standard CSV: a title row, a game/date row, a header row (Player, each category, Total, Rank), then one row per player. It opens directly in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Apple Numbers — use it as a board game score sheet Excel file or import it into a board game score sheet Google Sheets document — and names containing commas, quotes or line breaks are escaped correctly.
Printable board game score sheet
Looking for a board game score sheet printable — a free printable board game score sheet you can hand out at the table? Two options:
- Print sheet — prints the current game with all entered scores, totals, ranks and the date, formatted for paper.
- Print blank sheet — prints the same layout with empty score cells, ready to fill in by hand, plus a signature line for the winner.
The print layout hides all app chrome and fits a clean grid on one page. For a reusable template, print a blank sheet from the generic preset and photocopy it for future game nights. Need a board game score sheet PDF? Choose “Save as PDF” in your browser's print dialog when printing the blank sheet — free, no converter needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is this board game score sheet really free?
Yes — 100% free with no sign-up, no limits and no paywall. CSV export, printable scoresheets and unlimited saved games are all free, unlike some score-keeping apps that lock exports behind a subscription.
Do I need an account or an internet connection to use it?
No account is needed. The tool runs entirely in your browser — once the page has loaded it works offline, and your scores are stored in your browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Which board games does the score sheet support?
Any game. It ships with four presets: a generic round-by-round pad, a victory-point strategy preset (Catan-style), a route-building preset (Ticket-to-Ride-style) and an engine-building preset (Wingspan-style). You can also rename, add or remove every scoring category, so the sheet adapts to any game. Game names are used nominatively for description only; this tool is not affiliated with any publisher.
How does the score calculator handle ties?
It uses dense ranking: players with exactly equal totals share a rank (1, 2, 2, 3) and are all highlighted as winners. Optionally you can pick a tie-break category — for example “Longest Road” — which fully orders tied players by that category.
Can the lowest score win (golf-style scoring)?
Yes. Turn on “Lowest score wins” in the game options and rankings, winner highlight and margins all flip to golf-style scoring — perfect for games like golf card games where fewer points win.
Can I print a blank board game score sheet?
Yes. The “Print blank sheet” button generates a clean printable scoresheet with your players and categories but empty score cells, plus a signature line — handy when you prefer pen and paper at the table.
How do I export scores to Excel or Google Sheets?
Click “Export CSV” to download a spreadsheet-ready file with every player's per-category scores, totals and ranks. The CSV opens directly in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Apple Numbers.
Where are my saved games stored?
In your browser's local storage on this device only. Saved games never leave your computer. Clearing your browser's site data will delete them, so export a CSV backup of games you want to keep.
Can I share a live scoreboard link with friends?
Not directly — this is a privacy-first offline tool with no accounts and no server, so there is no live share link. To share results, export the CSV or print the sheet; everyone at the table can also just look at the same screen.
How do I score missed destination tickets or penalties?
Enter them as negative numbers in a penalty category (the route-building preset includes “Missed Tickets (subtract)”). Negative values are subtracted from the player's total automatically.
How many players and scoring categories are supported?
Up to 12 players and up to 40 scoring categories per game — enough for the biggest game nights.
Is this a board game rating system?
No. This is a score keeper for recording points during a game night, not a system for rating or reviewing games. If you want to rate your collection, a collection tracker is the right tool.
Is this a good free alternative to maketheboard's scoresheet maker?
If you want a free, no-sign-up score pad with printable sheets and free CSV export, yes — those exports sit behind a paywall on some freemium score-keeping apps. This tool trades live share links for privacy: no account, no server, everything stays in your browser.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The layout is responsive; on small screens the score table scrolls horizontally so every player column stays usable.
Can I use it for card games or dice games too?
Yes. The generic preset is a round-by-round pad that works for trick-taking card games, dice games, party games and anything scored per round. Combine it with “lowest score wins” for golf-style games.
My scores disappeared — what happened?
Scores live in your browser's local storage, so they are lost if you clear site data, use private/incognito mode, or switch browsers or devices. For games that matter, tap “Export CSV” as a backup before closing the tab.
