FAQ

What is a basis point (bps)?
One basis point equals 1/100 of a percent, i.e. 0.01 percent or 0.0001 in decimal form. One hundred basis points equal 1 percent.
Why does finance use basis points?
Basis points avoid the ambiguity of "percent of a percent." A rise from 5 percent to 6 percent can be called a 1 percentage point or 100 basis point increase, which cannot be misread as a 1 percent relative increase.
How much is 250 bps in percent and decimal?
250 bps equals 2.50 percent, or 0.025 in decimal form.
How do you compute the difference of two rates in bps?
Subtract the two rates in percent, then multiply by 100. Example: 5.25 percent minus 4.75 percent equals 0.50 percentage points, i.e. 50 bps.
What does a 25 bps Fed rate hike mean?
It means the benchmark rate rises 0.25 percentage points. For example from 4.50 percent to 4.75 percent.
How much is 1 bps in decimal form?
1 bps equals 0.0001 in decimal form.
How do you add bps to an interest rate?
Divide the bps by 100, then add to the rate in percent. Example: 5.00 percent plus 25 bps equals 5.00 percent plus 0.25 percent, i.e. 5.25 percent.
