Rounding Rules & Arithmetic Operations

How the Rounding Calculator Works

  • Half Up (standard): 2.5 → 3, 2.45 → 2.5 — the most common rounding rule taught in schools.
  • Half Down: 2.5 → 2, −2.5 → −3 — rounds towards negative infinity on tie.
  • Floor: Always rounds toward −∞. Floor(2.9) = 2, Floor(−2.1) = −3.
  • Ceiling: Always rounds toward +∞. Ceil(2.1) = 3, Ceil(−2.9) = −2.
  • Truncate: Drops digits after the decimal without rounding. Trunc(2.9) = 2, Trunc(−2.9) = −2.

Arithmetic Calculator Operations

  • Addition (+): Combines values. The arithmetic calculator handles large integers and decimals.
  • Subtraction (−): Finds the difference between two numbers.
  • Multiplication (×): Repeated addition of equal groups.
  • Division (÷): Splits a number into equal parts. Division by zero returns an error.
  • Percentage (%): Converts a number to its percentage equivalent for use in the next operation.

FAQ

Can I use the rounding calculator to round to whole numbers?

Yes! Set the decimal places to 0 in the rounding calculator and any number will be rounded to the nearest whole integer using your selected rounding mode.

How does the arithmetic calculator handle order of operations?

Our arithmetic calculator follows standard operator precedence (PEMDAS/BODMAS). However, since this is a sequential calculator, each operation is applied to the running result in chain fashion.
