IATA vs ICAO: what are airport codes called?

Two worldwide systems identify airports:

In the United States you may also encounter FAA Location Identifiers; for larger airports these match the IATA code. This finder covers airports that hold an official IATA code — 9,051 of them across 239 countries and territories.

Privacy: every search, lookup and distance calculation on this page happens locally in your browser. No query, location or result is ever sent to a server — there isn't one.

Frequently asked questions

What are airport codes called?

The two worldwide systems are IATA codes (3 letters, e.g. JFK — used on tickets and baggage tags) and ICAO codes (4 letters, e.g. KJFK — used by pilots and air traffic control). In the US you may also see FAA Location Identifiers, which usually match the IATA code for larger airports.

What is an IATA code for airports?

An IATA code is the 3-letter code assigned by the International Air Transport Association to identify airports on tickets, boarding passes and baggage tags — for example LHR for London Heathrow or SIN for Singapore Changi. This finder covers 9,051 airports that have an IATA code.

What is an ICAO airport code?

An ICAO code is the 4-letter code assigned by the International Civil Aviation Organization, used for flight planning and air traffic control — for example EGLL for London Heathrow or WIII for Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta. You can search this tool by ICAO code as well.

How do I find my airport code?

Type your city or airport name into the search box above — for example "chicago", "changi" or "denver" — and the tool instantly lists matching airports with their IATA and ICAO codes.

What is the airport code for London?

London is served by six airports with IATA codes: LHR (Heathrow), LGW (Gatwick), STN (Stansted), LTN (Luton), LCY (London City) and SEN (Southend). Search "london" above to see them all with details.

What is the airport code for New York?

New York City is served by JFK (John F. Kennedy), EWR (Newark Liberty) and LGA (LaGuardia). Search "new york" above for full details on each.

How many airports are in this airport code database?

9,051 airports with official IATA codes, sourced from the OurAirports public-domain dataset and covering 239 countries and territories — more than twice the 4,401 airports listed by airportcodeguide.com.

Is this airport code finder free?

Yes — completely free, no signup, no limits, and it runs entirely in your browser.

Does this tool show a map of airports?

No map — instead every airport result shows exact latitude/longitude coordinates you can paste straight into Google Maps or any map app, plus elevation and a great-circle distance calculator between any two airports.

How accurate is the distance-between-airports calculator?

It computes the great-circle (shortest path over the Earth) distance with the haversine formula using the IUGG mean Earth radius (6,371.0088 km). For example JFK to LHR is about 5,540 km. Real flight routes are slightly longer because of airways and winds.

What is the difference between IATA and FAA airport codes?

FAA Location Identifiers are assigned by the US Federal Aviation Administration. For most larger US airports the FAA code matches the IATA code (e.g. JFK). Smaller US airfields may have an FAA code but no IATA code — those are not in this database, which only lists airports with IATA codes.

Can I look up an airport by its ICAO code?

Yes. Type the 4-letter ICAO code (for example EGLL or WSSS) into the search box and the matching airport appears first.

Does "airports near me" send my location anywhere?

No. Your location is read by your own browser's geolocation API and never leaves your device — the nearest-airport calculation happens locally, and nothing is uploaded or stored.

Why do some cities have more than one airport code?

Large metro areas are served by several airports, each with its own code — for example Chicago has ORD (O'Hare) and MDW (Midway), and Tokyo has HND (Haneda) and NRT (Narita). Search the city name to see every airport serving it.

Where does the airport data come from?

The dataset is derived from OurAirports (ourairports.com), released into the public domain, filtered to the 9,051 airports that hold an official IATA code. Coordinates and elevations come from the same source.

Can I find an airport code from a street address?

Not with this tool — and that's deliberate. Turning a street address into coordinates (geocoding) requires a server API, and this finder is 100% offline with no server. Instead, search by the city name: type "houston", "denver" or "orlando" and you'll see every airport serving that city.

Can I export airport codes to Excel or CSV?

Yes. Run any search and click Download as CSV above the results — the file opens directly in Excel, Google Sheets or any spreadsheet app, with IATA, ICAO, name, city, country, coordinates and elevation columns.

Data source

Airport data: OurAirports (ourairports.com) — public domain. Filtered to airports holding an official IATA code (9,051 airports, 239 countries/territories). Country names: ISO 3166-1. Distances: haversine great-circle, IUGG mean Earth radius 6,371.0088 km.

Airport data changes slowly (new airports open, codes occasionally change). If you spot an error, the canonical sources are IATA and ICAO.
